Brett Favre of the Irwin Alchoholics was the losing quarterback from Super Bowl I. Three years later, he was given an unexpected shot at redemption for the Irwin Hellions. Seizing the opportunity, the veteran shotcaller unleashed his best performance of the season, lifting the Hellions past Jody's Colossal Waste of Time to capture the 2000 FLF Championship.

Super Bowl MVP Brett Favre celebrates his third passing touchdown of the game.

A week ago, Donovan McNabb – perhaps the Hellion quarterback of the future – put on a magical performance against the Bock Boys to secure Irwin a berth in the Super Bowl. Because of scheduling, however, McNabb would be sitting out the Super Bowl on a bye. The team turned to Brett Favre, and the veteran backup answered impressively.

Super Bowl IV started with a bang. as the Hellions returned the opening kickoff to the C.W.O.T. 41 yard line. Keeping it on the ground, Curtis Martin and Edgerrin James forged ahead for a pair of first downs, but the C.W.O.T. Dolphin defense held their ground. A 31-yard Olindo Mare field goal put Irwin on the board for an early 3-0 lead.

Jody countered impressively by pushing around the storied Hellion Buccanneer defense for nearly seven minutes and eighty yards. Eddie George ran for 62 of those over nine carries before striking paydirt with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

On the next posession, the Hellions tried to answer the C.W.O.T. ground assault with a constant dose of Edgerrin James. But on his fifth consecutive carry, Zach Thomas stripped James of the football, and Jody took over at Irwin's 46 yard line. Yet on third-and-five, Kerry Collins threw an ill-advised pass under duress that was picked off by John Lynch and returned deep into C.W.O.T. territory. Brett Favre and Co. was in business. On second and eight from the 22, Favre hit Chris Carter across the middle for the Hellions' first touchdown and the lead after one quarter of play.

Quarter Two, however, was all Eddie George. Irwin's defense put the clamps on the C.W.O.T. receivers and made a mockery of an injured Stephen Davis' efforts, but they couldn't slow down The Horse. George busted a bruising sixteen-yard touchdown, capping another long Jody drive. Midway through the second quarter, George had already eclipsed 100 yards. And he wasn't done. Following a rare fumble by the Hellions' Chris Carter, Eddie George found the endzone for the third time in the first half with an eight-yard surge.

The C.W.O.T. defense forced two Hellion punts in the second quarter. After the second, with a 21-10 lead, they gave the ball to Stephen Davis in relief of the winded Geroge. Warren Sapp crushed Davis off the line, knocking the ball out and recovering it at the C.W.O.T. 25. With 41 seconds left in the half, Curtis Martin got the ball across the goal line, and Olindo Mare added the PAT to shrink the C.W.O.T. halftime lead to four.

The second half started with Irwin finding the answer for Eddie George. Perhaps the first half took its toll, or perhaps the Hellion defense began to strengthen, but George was stopped twice at the line. After a failed third down conversion, Jody punted the ball away, and Brett Favre took over. Putting the ball in the air, Favre went five-for-five and drove the offense to the C.W.O.T. 2 yard line before Edgerrin James took it around the corner to regain the lead.

With most of the offense struggling, Jody kept feeding the ball to George, and he began grinding out the hard yards again. Yet on another fateful third down, Collins coughed up the ball, throwing behind Tim Brown for his second interception. Favre came back on the field, and unleashed hell upon the Mighty C.W.O.T.. A thirteen yard screen to James set up a forty-one yard touchdown bomb to Jimmy Smith to put the Hellions ahead 31-21.

Now down by ten, Jody had to put the ball in the air to get back in the game. Joe Horn and Tim Brown made consecutive catches to drive the C.W.O.T. deep into Irwin territory. Eddie George was brought back in but contained, forcing another dreaded third down. The embattered Collins stood in the pocket and found Horn racing across the middle at the five en route to a much-needed score. The subsequent extra point, however, was blocked, keeping the Jody deficit at four.

Despite 173 yards and three first-half touchdowns, Eddie George walks off the field without a win.

As the fourth quarter began, Brett Favre exhibited no signs of letting up on the C.W.O.T.. The veteran quarterback slowly picked the tiring Miami defense apart. On a key third-and-five, the Edge took a shotgun draw up the middle for a sixteen yard gain and a first down at Jody's 24-yard-line. The next play from scrimmage, Favre hit Carter in the back of the endzone for a near game-breaking score. It was Favre's third touchdwon strike of the night, and he was nearing 300 yards passing.

The two defenses stepped up in crunch time, forcing consecutive punts. Down eleven, Jody showed some life by returning the punt to the Irwin 33. With under eight minutes remaining, Collins kept the ball in the air, but completed only one of five attemps in bringing the C.W.O.T. to the 18-yard-line. On fourth and eight, and playing for two scores, Martin Gramatica hit his only field goal attempt of the night to cut the deficit to eight.

The Hellions then preyed on a defense weary of the pass by running Curtis Martin up the middle to keep the chains moving and the clock counting. With under three minutes left in the game, Olindo Mare pushed the margin back to eleven with his second field goal of the night. Back on the field came the Hellacious Irwin defense to make one last stand. Eddie George, whi had dominated the defense in the first half, only got the ball once more for a meager two-yard burst. Collins managed to lead Jody back across midfield, but his last-ditch fourth and long pass to Brown fell to the ground. Favre took a couple of knees to run out the clock as the defense doused Coach Irwin with Gatorade. The Hellions had won Super Bowl IV.

In the celebration on the field, Eddie George embraced Favre, congratulating the quarterback on his performance and victory. Both athletes gave it their all, each laying out their best perfromance of the year. Favre was awarded the game's MVP, narrowly beating out the efforts of George. For the first time in six meetings, Irwin found an answer for the Colossal Waste of Time. And while the Hellions celebrate their franchise's first league championship, Jody becomes the league's first two-time Super Bowl runner-up.

Congratulations, Irwin Hellions – 2000 FLF Champions!
