Week 8 Previews

Sims Stereco
at
The Pimps
(4 - 3)
(6 - 1)
series history: Pimps lead 5-2
last meeting: Week 1
PIMPS 40, Sims 30

The Division Champion Pimps enter the second half of the season with a two game lead in the East. It's probably a good thing, too, as five of their final six games are within the division. While their eight-game regular season win streak was snapped by the Bock Boys, The Pimps are still riding an unprecedented ten-game division win streak; their last divisional loss was actually over two years ago, in Week 6 of 1998 against Anderson. Now the Stereco, riding a two-game win streak and eyeing the division title, come to town.

Kurt Warner, the Stereco's field general, has been everything advertised and then some. Averaging over 13 ppg, he gives Sims a immediate threat. Another offensive boost has come with the development of sophomore running back Ricky Williams, who is now consistently putting up 100-yard efforts. Sims will need both Warner and Ricky to play huge against The Pimps, as the bye week has claimed a whopping five members of the Stereco. A short-handed game on the road against the division leader can't bode too well for Sims, but an upset would bring them within a game of The Pimps with five to play. A loss, and they can pretty much write off any division title hopes they might be clutching

victims of the bye week:
Sims - RB Barber, RB Dayne, DEF NY Giants, REC Schroeder, K Longwell
Pimps - DEF Green Bay

The Players
at
B.Y.O.B.
(2 - 5)
(1 - 6)

series history: first meeting

In what some are calling a Draft Bowl preview, the struggling Players travel to meet the expansion Banshees. With only three wins between them, the outcome may not rock the world, but it will snap a losing streak for someone. The Players have currently dropped a modest two straight while the B.Y.O.B. have bombed in their last five. Led by Jeff Garca and Randy Moss, The Players have the obvious offensive advantage. Yet Brandon holds the stronger defense with Washington, and will be looking to strip back as much of The Player's offense as possible. This should be a close, low-scoring affair.

victims of the bye week:
Players - none
B.Y.O.B. - K Carney, REC Toomer

Abstract Machines
at
Irwin Hellions
(3 - 4)
(5 - 2)
series history: Irwin leads 5-3
last meeting: Championship Week, 1999
POST. SPIRITUALISTS 51, at Irwin 25

With the Abstract Machines losing their last three games, this Western division matchup has lost some of its luster. Thankfully, there's always revenge to spice things up.

Irwin claimed the Western title in 1999 behind a strong mark of 8-4. The Machines gave them a race for most of the year, but fell into second at 6-6. After beating the Stereco during Wild Card Week, the then-Poststructural Spiritualists ambushed the well-rested then-Intellectuals at home during Championship Week to advance to the Super Bowl. Irwin has had a long time to think about that, and hasn't forgotten.

These two will meet twice over the next four weeks, allowing for some pretty brutal football. Hoping to buck their losing streak, the Machines will have to break back into the win column the hard way, against Irwin's potent offense and suffocating defense. The Hellions, should they play as well as they have in recent weeks, could quickly make the Machines a non-factor in the Western race.

victims of the bye week:
Machines - none
Irwin - QB Favre, RB Levens

Thomas' Bock Boys
at
Piana Raze
(4 - 3)
(3 - 4)
series history: Thomas leads 1-0
last meeting: Week 1
Piana 0, at THOMAS 39

39-0. That is how the Bock Boys were christened into the FLF - a plastering of the storied Raze in front of their hometown crowd. Now, six weeks later, it's Thomas that gets on a bus and travels to En Fuego Field for a much anticipated rematch between instant Western rivals. The Bock Boys have played beyond anyone's expectations, finding themselves only a game back of the Hellions. Piana, having won two in a row, finds itself only a game back of Thomas. In fact, both clubs have gone a modest 3-3 since their Week 1 encounter. While Thomas is coming off a huge win over the previously-undefeated Pimps, the B. Boys have yet to win consecutive games. The Raze will be looking to see that pattern through.

victims of the bye week:
Thomas - none
Piana - REC Freeman

Game of the Week
Jody's C.W.O.T.
at
Anderson Brewmeisters
(4 - 3)
(3 - 4)
series history: Anderson leads 5-1
last meeting: Wild Card Week, 1999
ANDERSON 39, Jody 38

Sure, the series history is five games to one, but make no mistake - this is the meanest rivalry in the East. Anderson has made a career out of handling the Colossal Waste of Time. In 1997, Anderson swept the season set before thumping Jody - for good measure - in the Super Bowl. Last season, the two combatents split before meeting in a very memorably Wild Card game that saw the 3-8-1 Brewmeisters clip the 8-4 C.W.O.T. at home 39-38. The win catapulted Anderson towards their second consecutive Super Bowl Championship.

So here we are in 2000. The C.W.O.T. are once again ahead of Anderson, trying to stay within striking range of The Pimps. The Brewmeisters are looking to steady the ship after some early season turbulance, and a divisional win over Jody would bring them back to .500 and into serious playoff contention. Not to mention some pour salt in a growing wound. This could get nasty, and nasty is always fun to watch.

victims of the bye week:
Jody - QB Collins, REC Hilliard
Anderson - none
