Week 6 Previews

Abstract Machines
at
The Pimps
(3 - 2)
(5 - 0)
series history: Pimps lead 4-1
last meeting: Week 12, 1999
PIMPS 29, at Post. Spiritualists 22

Two division leaders lock horns in what is sure to be a hard-hitting, midseason contest. The Eastern-leading Pimps have started the season with five straight wins and hold a two-game edge over the second place C.W.O.T. The Machines have won three of four, but are coming off a tough divisional loss to the surprising Bock Boys. Yet the game is tempered somewhat by the bye week as both clubs lose key starters. The Pimps will be without receiver Derrick Alexander and placekicker Jeff Wilkens, who combined for a massive 33 points in last week's romp over Anderson. The Machines will feel the hurt as well with Marshall Faulk and the St. Louis Ram Defense taking a breather. Faulk is the heart and soul of the franchise and leads all FLF running backs with 64 points through five games. Given these personnel losses, points might be harder to come by for both clubs. Yet The Pimps remain the favorite, particularly having won the last four contests in this series.

victims of the bye week:

Pimps - REC McKnight, REC Alexander, K Wilkens

B.Y.O.B.
at
Sims Stereco
(1 - 4)
(2 - 3)

series history: Sims leads 1-0
last meeting: Week 4
SIMS 46, at B.Y.O.B. 31

Two struggling Eastern clubs look to use the other as a cure as the Sims Stereco host Brandon's Yellow-bellied Overweight Banshees. Having met only two weeks ago, both clubs' rosters are more or less as they were. Yet Sims will be nearly crippled by the bye week as it will have to go without three starters including Kurt Warner, the league's most productive offensive player. Already being three games out and having their preseason aspirations ripped away, the Stereco look to avoid a complete meltdown at the hands of a dangerous Banshee team that has yet to catch a break.

victims of the bye week:
B.Y.O.B. - REC Hakim
Sims - QB Warner, REC Ismail, REC Galloway, DEF Kansas City

Jody' C.W.O.T.
at
Thomas' Bock Boys
(3 - 2)
(3 - 2)
series history: first meeting

In what has developed into a big game for both clubs, Jody's Colossal Waste of Time goes on the road to lock up with Thomas' Bock Boys. Both clubs sit at 3-2, yet Jody's two games back in the East while Thomas is in a three-way tie atop the West. Despite being an expansion club, the Bock Boys seem to have the advantage over Jody, who has struggled offensively in recent weeks. Bock Boy Daunte Culpepper is on fire, and the rest of the cast is starting to play with some consistency. Moreover, this is a welcome home game for Thomas, who is 2-0 at Bockyard Stadium thus far in 2000. Should be quite a barn burner between two teams striving for their respective division titles.

victims of the bye week:
Jody - none
Thomas - REC Gonzales, K Seder

Irwin Hellions
at
The Players
(3 - 2)
(2 - 3)
series history: Irwin leads 6-1
last meeting: Week 1
Players 13, at IRWIN 50

Here's a stat: since Irwin's week one drubbing of the Players, both teams have gone 2-2, setting up a dramatic midseason rematch. The Players have posted back-to-back commanding performances en route to two divisional wins. The Hellions downed Sims last week after dropping two in a row, and, while being in a tie atop the West, find themselves only a game up of the resurging Players. Here's another stat: Irwin is now 6-1 lifetime against The Players. Moreover, the Hellions will be without a bye week casualty while The Players will have to go without their warrior on the ground, the eternal Emmitt Smith. Should The Players pull off the upset, they'd match last season's total win count and find themselves thick in the Western race.

victims of the bye week:
Irwin - none
Players - RB Smith, DEF Dallas

Game of the Week
Piana Raze
at
Anderson Brewmeisters
(1 - 4)
(2 - 3)
series history: Piana leads 2-1-1
last meeting: Week 8, 1999
Anderson 21, at Piana 21

On the surface, these are two teams that share a combined three wins between them. Yet in the developing history of the FLF, these are two franchises that share a combined three Super Bowl Championships between them. Yet in 2000, as with much of 1999, these two once-proud franchises find themselves struggling for wins that used to come easy. Moreover, both teams are on pace to miss the playoffs, and a loss here could virtually write off hopes for a division championship.

Both clubs feature capable quarterbacks, explosive receivers, and a crippled backfield. Points have been hard to come by for the Raze, while the Brewskies lead the league in points allowed. The quarterback duel between Peyton Manning and Brian Griese should be fun to watch, but this is more likely to be a low scoring game decided by defense.

So throw out the Championships. Ignore the glory years. This is 2000, and both clubs are just desparate for a win to keep alive their postseason dreams.
