Week 4 tips off with an interesting matchup between two teams coming
off the wrong end of an upset. Anderson dropped a game last week
to the expansion Bock Boys while Irwin was suckerpunched by the
struggling Raze. These two offenses are pretty evenly matched, and
the best show should come from the ground game. The Hellions welcome
back Edgerrin James after a bye week and will pair him off with
either Dorsey Levens or Curtis Martin; the Brewmeisters are enthusiastically
looking for the return of Fred Taylor to work alongside Duce Staley.
Irwin has a sizebale advantage on defense however, where the Buccaneers
have outperformed everyone, including Anderson's underachieving
Raven squad.
This is one of the youngest series in the league, as the two teams
have only met twice before, both times with Anderson at home. The
Brewmeisters have embarassed Irwin in the previous meetings by a
combined score of 114-47. Can they catch Irwin off guard again to
even their record, or will the Hellions take out last week's frustrations
on the bewildered Brewmeisters? Should be a fun one.

series history: first meeting

The Sims Stereco are hurting. So much so that
team owner Chris Sims jokingly suggested they change their name
to the Sims S.O.L. Kevin Dyson has joined Olandis Gary and Joey
Galloway with torn ACLs and an early offseason. What was the best
receiving corps last season is battered and bruised, if not broken.
The title talk for the Stereco has quieted down, and a loss to the
Banshees would be crippling to team morale.
Yet don't expect a lot of cooperation from the Banshees, who are
out to atone for a lackluster effort last week during a rout by
the Abstract Machines. The most glaring hole for the Banshees is
the running game, where Curtis Enis and Antowain Smith have combined
for nine points in three games. That's 1.5 points per person per
game, and that's just not getting the job done. This should be a
good ol' Eastern division scrap between wounded teams.

series history: first meeting

This father vs. son contest is an FLF first and should provide
lots of great commentary. Thomas Pirkle leads his Bock Boys back
out on the road against a hard-luck Players team that is still
searching for its first win. Despite the drama which that alone
provides, both teams will be without their star players due to
the bye. The Bock Boys' roster is certainly deep enough to accomodate,
but The Players could be shorthanded; despite losing three starters,
they'll also have to make a change at kicker as Brett Conway was
sent packing after "falling out of favor" with the team.
This could be a defining moment for both clubs as - dare I say
it - the first-place Bock Boys look to pin one on the endangered
Players.

Piana is riding an emotional high after stunning the high-octane
Hellions last week, but the celebration won't last long as Marshall
Faulk and the high-octane Abstact Machines come to town. The Machines
have posted consecutive victories to move into a tie atop the West
while Piana lifts itself out of the cellar with a 1-2 record. The
Raze have dominated the series, only losing to the Machines once,
back in Week 2 of '99.
The Machines will have to go without the leg of Mike Hollis, who
injured his back prior to Week 3, and the Raze will be without the
reliable Wesley Walls (bye) and have questions on the availability
of QB Brian Griese and RB Terrell Davis, both nursing injuries.
Like last week, it seems the only reasonble chance the Raze have
lies in the hands of the defense, who must come up big to slow down
the likes of Faulk, Shaun King, and Marvin Harrison.

PIMPS 37, at Jody 35

It's only Week 4, but this is easily the biggest
matchup of the young season. The Pimps have played the role of
defending division champion as good as anyone, brushing aside
their first three opponents. Jody would also be 3-0 if it weren't
for a two-point road loss to B.Y.O.B. back in Week 2. That loss
puts the C.W.O.T. in a particular bind should they lose to The
Pimps and fall two games back. For added pressure, Jody has lost
the last three contests in this series, and The Pimps will fight
hard to make it four.
These two teams posted a remarkable race down the stretch in '99,
with The Pimps claiming the division after Jody dropped three
of its last four games. The Pimps are also in a position to start
the season with four consecutive wins. The only team to ever accomplish
this: Jody's C.W.O.T. way back in 1997 en route to a 10-2 season.
Here's to a war.
