Week 2 Previews

Anderson Brewmeisters
at
Sims Stereco
(1 - 0)
(0 - 1)
series history: Sims leads 3-1
last meeting: Week 7, 1999
Anderson 25, at SIMS 30

The Anderson Brewmeisters rode the back of Kurt Warner through the '99 postseaon en route to their second consecutive Super Bowl victory. His reward: a preseason trade to the Stereco in exchange for placekicker Mike Vanderjagt. No doubt that all eyes this week will be on Warner and his Brewmeister successor, young Peyton Manning. Although they would never admit it publicly, both will be playing with something to prove.

Aside from the shotcallers behind center, this game will feature a growing rivalry within the Eastern Division. Sims has taken the past three contests in the series, and are looking to extend that streak while breaking into the win column in 2000. Yet they'll have to do so without Joey Galloway or backup runner Olandis Gary who were both lost for the year with torn ACLs. After waiting five weeks o score their first victory of the season in '99, the Brewskies have wasted no time in doing so this season, and are now looking to reestablish themselves as true contenders for the Eastern crown.

series history: first meeting

Call it the battle of the abbreviations as Brandon's Yellow-bellied Overweight Banshees make their home debut against Jody's Colossal Waste of Time. The C.W.O.T. enter the game with the momentum of a strong defensive showing and a Week 1 victory. Brandon's coming off a strong effort in a narrow defeat and will be fighting hard for the franchise's first win.

Despite the offensive playmakers on each team, this game's key matchup is likely to be the defense. Jody's Miami squad and Brandon's Washington D had stellar performances last week and could easily do so again. As uncharacteristic as it seems for Eastern teams, this could be a true defensive battle. And it's one the Banshees will have to win to pull off the upset.

The Pimps

(1 - 0)
series history: Piana leads 3-1
last meeting: Week 6, 1999
Pimps 6, at PIANA 4

This game features the strongest contrast in recent performances. The Pimps dazzled their way past the Stereco behind the legs and arm of Cade McNown while Piana suffered the franchise's most embarassing defeat at the hands of an expansion team. Indeed, these could be two teams heading in two very different directions.

The Raze promptly issued Jon Kitna his unconditional release and will be debuting a new quarterback as well as first-overall pick Peter Warrick in an all-out effort to right the ship. More than anything else, The Pimps will have to guard against overconfidence, especially following such a huge win on the road.

series history: tied 3-3
last meeting: Week 11, 1999
Post. Spiritualists 27, at PLAYERS 0

2000 is off to a bleak start for The Players, who were bounced in Week 1 by the Hellions and are now thrown the Machines - a team that swept the season series in '99 by a combined score of 76-12. Both teams are coming off of opening day losses, and an early season divisional win would a major remedy.

As with last season, the Machines are capable of putting major points on the board behind the likes of Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison. The Players counter with their potent 3M receiving corps of Muhammad, Moss, and Mathis. If The Players can just get out of the gate, this could be a real footrace.

Game of the Week
Thomas' Bock Boys
at
Irwin Hellions
(1 - 0)
(1 - 0)
series history: first meeting

Who would have thought an expansion team would have found itself in the Week 2 Game of the Week? Irwin surely didn't, but they'll have to play anyway as the only two undefeated teams remaining in the West vye for the uncontested division lead.

Both teams posted near-obscene victories in Week 1. Irwin routed The Players by 37 while Thomas ambushed Piana by 39. The big difference between the two, however, is experience. Irwin proved last season they were capable of playing with the big boys week in and week out. Only time will tell of the Bock Boys if their Week 1 performance is an accurate portrayal or rather an adrenaline-fueled overachievement.

Regardless of that debate, Thomas brought the pain against the Raze a week ago and expect to do no less for their first game on the road. Hellions Edgerrin James and Curtis Martin, along with the savage Buccaneer defense, could have a say in that matter as the defending division champs go for their eighth consecutive regular season win. Should be barn burner.
