series history: first meeting

Fantasy League Football welcomes Brandon's Yellow-bellied Overweight Banshess into the league. "Hi. Thanks for coming. First up, we're going to send you on the road to meet the two-time defending Super Bowl Champions. Isn't this fun?"

B.Y.O.B. has indeed been given a tough assignment. How much of a luxury was it for the Brewmeisters to have Peyton Manning ride the bench all of last year? Well now young Peyton gets his chance to lead the powerful offensive machine that, surprisingly, went largely unassisted last season. The Brewmeisters front office made sure a repeat performance would be prevented by signing back the Titan defense and trading up to draft the Ravens defensive squad. Brandon drafted a defensive power as well, but is Washington enough to keep it close as the B.Y.O.B. offense tries to gel?

Jody's C.W.O.T.

Abstract Machines

series history: tied 2-2
last meeting: Week 8, 1999
Post. Spiritualists 27, at JODY 47

This is one of the least celebrated series in the league. Having only met four times in three seasons, the C.W.O.T. and Machines (formerly Poststructural Spiritualists) are relatively unfamiliar with each other, and have never really met with anything important on the line. Yet both teams showed vast improvements in '99 and are looking to take the next step (read: beat the Brewmeisters in the postseason).

Despite the lack of a rivalry, this game shines with star power. Jody brings in one of the best backfields in Eddie George and Stephen Davis; A. Machines counter with Marshall Faulk and all-star receiver Marvin Harrison. The quarterback position may be the one that decides the game with Jody having veteran experience in Brad Johnson and the Machines choosing from second-year candidates Tim Couch and Shaun King.

series history: first meeting

The Piana Raze fell hard and fast in 1999, going from consecutive Championship Week appearances to the Draft Bowl. This weekend marks the return of Terrell Davis and Jamal Anderson, and the Raze couldn't ask for a better way to ease them back into the fold than a game against an expansion team.

Thomas' Bock Boys make their FLF debut with a corps of young talent. Dante Culpepper and Jamal Lewis are sure to give the home crowd some thrills, but it might be asking too much of them to keep pace with the likes of T.D., Isaac Bruce, and Antonio Freeman right out of the gate.

series history: Irwin leads 5-1
last meeting: Week 8, 1999
Players 23, at IRWIN 37

The Irwin Hellions (formerly known as the Intellectuals) begin their first Western Division title defense against a favorable divisional foe; The Players are a lowly 1-5 against Irwin in three seasons. Irwin swept the Players aside last season, including a 21-0 smothering in Week 3.

The addition of Cris Carter solidifies the Hellions as the favorite in the West, but Bret Favre and Dorsey Levens are nursing preseason injuries and are questionable for the weekend. The Players, who are likely to ride on the capable shoulders of Randy Moss, have been trying to regroup and get back into the playoff form they flashed in '98. A road win over the defending division champs would be a huge step in that direction.

Game of the Week
The Pimps

series history: Pimps lead 4-2
last meeting: Week 8, 1999
Sims 34, at PIMPS 36

The highlight of Kickoff Weekend is a rematch of "The Greatest Game Ever." Last season, during the thick of the Eastern Divisional race, these two teams clashed in one of the most exciting and memorable games in FLF history. Down 34-33 with just over two minutes remaining in the game, quarterback Jeff George drove The Pimps 74 yards downfield to the Stereco six yard line. John Kasay hit the 23-yard chip shot as time expired, giving the home team the dramatic 36-34 victory and crushing the spirit and title hopes of the Stereco.

But this is 2000, and the times thay are a changin'. Despite a great draft, The Pimps have taken numerous hits in the offseason. Kasay was lost for the year to the defending Eastern Division Champions in the preseason, and George is likely to start the season on the bench. Michael Irvin has retired, and Cecil Collins is in jail. Sims, however, seems to be moving in a more forward direction. Chris Carter and Mike Vanderjagt may be gone, but Joey Galloway and reigning MVP Kurt Warner are powerful additions to a budding Stereco offense.

The Pimps went a perfect 6-0 in divisional play last season, and are looking for another quick start in 2000 at the expense of a divisional rival. The new-look Stereco are eager to put the fruits of their offseason labor on the field and would be more than happy should Warner and Co. light it up against the hated Pimps. Here's to an early season classic.
