Week 2 Previews

Piana Raze at Jody's C.W.O.T.
(0 - 1)   (1 - 0)
series history: Jody leads 11-5
last meeting: Week 3, 2008
JODY 35, at Piana 25

Week 2 kicks off from the Vortex, where Jody's Colossal Waste of Time hosts the Piana Raze in the first of three interdivisional contests on the slate. The Raze are just happy to be through with Week 1, having been shut out 35-0 by the visiting Hellions. Ben Roethlisburger and Maurice Jones Drew will get starting assignments over Matt Shaub and Matt Forte for this one as Piana hopes to finally get on the scoreboard. Jody escaped Week 1 with a 1-point road victory over The Pimps, yet the C.W.O.T. could use more than the 7 points of production it got from its receiving corps. With the Figs coming to town next week for a Championship Week rematch, Jody needs to be careful to not be caught looking ahead.

Naughty Figs at Irwin Hellions
(0 - 0 - 1)   (1 - 0)
series history: Irwin leads 9-1
last meeting: Week 3, 2008
Irwin 18, at FIGS 26

The Naughty Figs – last year's best regular season team – heads into the Hellhole to take on last week's best team, the Irwin Hellions. The Figs, fresh off a 12-1 campaign last year, failed to get a decision in Week 1 against Anderson, while the Hellions romped past the Piana Raze 35-0 behind an incredible 43-point performance from its Eagles D. Putting that number in perspective, the entire Fig team scored only 43 points against the Brew. While it's unlikely Irwin can repeat that defensive performance, there is an undeniable swagger back on the Hellion sideline after that win. Can the defending Eastern Division Champions break into the win column against a motivated team which had – until last season – won the previous 9 meetings in the series?

The Pimps at P.W.O.P.
(0 - 1)   (1 - 0)
series history: P.W.O.P. leads 9-6
last meeting: Week 7, 2008
P.W.O.P. 31, at PIMPS 40

The final interdivisional contest of the week has The Pimps heading to Oil Town to take on Pirk in the Wicked Oil Profiteer$' home opener. The Pimps nearly pulled out a victory over Jody last week behind Adrian Peterson's 19 points, but four other players – rookie Beanie Wells, Joey Galloway, Kris Brown, and the Texans defense – managed a single point or less, dooming the Feathered Ones to a 1-point loss. P.W.O.P., who fell out of the playoff picture last year due to horrific defensive play, were led in Week 1 by – what else? – their new Vikings defense, which ripped the Bock for 18 points. The offense still needs to find its footing, but another 30 points from special teams and defense might land Pirk its first 2-0 start since 2003.

Thomas' Bock Boys at Abstract Machines
(0 - 1)   (0 - 1)
series history: Thomas leads 11-8
last meeting: Week 11, 2008
Thomas 25, at MACHINES 29

The lone Western division contest of the week is also the only matchup of 0-1 teams. The defending Division and Super Bowl Champion Thomas' Bock Boys look to rebound from a horrible opening week effort against the Abstract Machines, who had a strong showing but suffered a loss nonetheless against the Sims Stereco. The Bock Boys were done in last week when starting QB Carson Palmer managed only a single point and their Cowboy defense actually gave 5 points away. The Machines, in contrast, had three players – Tom Brady, Thomas Jones, and the Titans defense – each reach double-digits in a losing effort against the Stereco. Thomas will need to find some scoring this week, or the Machines might make it four in a row against the Bockville boys.

Game of the Week
Sims Stereco at Anderson Brewmeisters
(1 - 0)   (0 - 0 - 1)
series history: Anderson leads 13-9
last meeting: Week 11, 2008
Sims 23, at ANDERSON 38

The Game of the Week heads East to Saint Arnold Stadium where the 0-0-1 Anderson Brewmeisters host the surprising 1-0 Sims Stereco.

Is Drew Brees the best quarterback in the FLF? Can the Stereco – following two straight Draft Bowl appearances – play its way back into the playoff mix? Those may be open-ended questions given the length of the season, but both Brees and the Stereco made them suddenly relevant following an inspired 44-27 win over the Abstract Machines. Brees threw for 6 TDs and 23 points, good enough for the second-best score behind the Eagle defense's 43 (whom, coincidentally, Brees faces on Sunday).

Anderson heads into Week 2 in standings limbo. Having neither won nor lost in Week 1, this will be like the season opener all over again. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily, considering the Brewmeisters six offensive players combining for only 21 points, or two less than Brees by himself. The once-feared Anderson receiving corps produced only 4 points and 83 combined yards. Hooray for second chances!

With the Brew Krew suddenly looking vulnerable, Sims has an opportunity to start a season 2-0 for the first time in ten years (having last accomplished the feat in 1999). Anderson has won the last five meetings with the Stereco, however, so Sims will need to bring its "A" game once again.
