It wasn’t
pretty. Played on a rain-soaked field in
Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, Super Bowl
XII looked not so much like a showcase of the
league’s two best teams, but more like
a survival contest. And, like many previous
Super Bowls, the suspense (as well as many of
the fans) left well before the final gun. But
there were several interesting side-bars, including
a few notable individual performances; and, in
the end, the Thomas Bock Boys took the Lombardi
trophy home to Bockville for the second time,
courtesy of a 32 – 19 win over Jody’s
C.W.O.T.
The postseason strategy of the Time Wasters
seemed to be “play small,” and hope
the competition would do the same. It had
worked to perfection in their two previous match-ups,
against the Abstract Machines and Naughty Figs,
and to some extent it was also successful in
this game. The C.W.O.T. offense came away
from their first two possessions with John Carney
field goals (Carney would ultimately add two
PATs and score 8 points).

Ricky
Williams, subbing for the injured Marion
Barber, finished with 84 total yards and
a TD for the Bock Boys. |
Thomas countered
with a 7 point, 71 yard TD reception from Antonio
Bryant. Bryant would finish with 7, as
a fumble negated his additional 2 yardage points. Jody’s
RB Steven Jackson tried to carry the load for
the C.W.O.T. offense, and managed 6 points while
failing to reach the endzone. But the C.W.O.T.
receiving corps was pretty much a waste of time. Calvin
Johnson posted 3 points, and it went downhill
from there, with Roddy White making only 3 catches
for 24 yards and a single point, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh
failing to make any contribution.
When
Bock Boys’ lone set back Ricky Williams
out-pointed the other Miami (and C.W.O.T.) RB
Cedric Benson 6 – 3 (correction: Ronnie
Brown. Benson was on the bench with his
7 points.), the Boys began to open up a lead. Quarterback
David Garrard, the game’s eventual MVP,
passed for 329 yards and a score, and rushed
for another, while tossing only one interception,
for a game high 11 points. Thomas’ Cowboys
defense kept the Jodys in check, scoring 11 takeway
points.
At the end of the 3rd quarter,
and with six players for each team in the books,
the Time Wasters were down 20. To make
matters worse, the deck was stacked in favor
of Thomas, as Jody had quarterback Aaron Rodgers
throwing to Bock Boys receivers Donald Driver
and Greg Jennings (and sure enough, Jennings
was there to catch one of Rodgers’ two
TD tosses). Moreover, every yard thrown
by Rodgers meant points off Jody’s Bears
defense, and every pic (there was one) by ‘Da
Bears took 2 points from Rodgers’ score.

David
Garrard was named Super Bowl XII MVP after
leading his team to its second league title. |
The fans could see it coming and, not anxious
to suffer through a sixth C.W.O.T. Subpar Bowl
loss, began heading for the parking lot. To
their credit, the Jodys managed to outscore the
Bock Boys 15 – 8 in the final quarter,
with Rodgers posting 9 and the Bears D taking
6 away from Thomas. But at game’s
end, the Pewter and Black could only agonize
over Jody’s
tough luck in leaving Benson’s, Antonio
Gates’, and Santonio Holmes’ combined
23 points (net: 19 lost) on the bench, as they
had to watch yet another Lombardi trophy being
awarded to the other team.
Persons on the
field reported hearing Jody ask Thomas if he
could just hold the trophy for a moment. To
which, Thomas is alleged to have replied, “Touch
the trophy and I’ll give you a “Shiner” that’ll
match your jersey color.” Whether
true or not, both owners graciously shook hands
and brought the 2008 FFL season to an official
close.
Congratulations Thomas' Bock Boys – 2008
FLF Champions!
