ANDERSON 43, at Sims 38 |
| |
The season's
final quarter kicks off from Saint Arnold Stadium,
where the Anderson Brewmeisters host the Sims
Stereco in an Eastern Division battle. The Brewmeisters
are coming off a home loss to the Naughty Figs,
who in turn won the Eastern Division crown as
a result. The Stereco were never really
a player in the division race, but they are coming
off a highly impressive rout of the Abstract
Machines and are clinging to very faint playoff
hopes.
Sims destroyed the Machines last week thanks to
huge games from Drew Brees, Kellen Winslow, Brandon
Jacobs, and the Jets defense. After losing twice
to the Brew Krew in 2007 by a combined 114-0 score,
the Stereco certainly need all the big plays they
can get. They managed to score against Anderson
in Week 5, but still fell short. Can Sims use last
week's effort as a springboard into the playoff
hunt? The Brewmeisters certainly seem to be ripe
for the picking. Their performance against the
FIgs – in which they scored a single
point from their three-person receiving corps
– was the lowest of the week and their second-lowest
of the season. Can the Brew Krew right the ship
in time for another playoff run?

The Naughty Figs
will take the field as Eastern Division Champions
for the first time when they host Pirk's Wicked
Oil Profiteer$ in an interdivisional matchup.
A few weeks ago, this game was set up to be a
battle of division leaders. But while the FIgs
closed in on a divisional crown, Pirk dropped
two straight to fall a game back of the charging
Bock Boys.
All told, the Profiteer$ have now dropped
three of their last four games, including last
week's painful 45-44 home loss to the Hellions.
The defense shoulders most of the blame for
the skid. In those three recent losses, Pirk's
defensive units totaled – I kid you not – three
combined points. In severe contrast, it lit up
the Raze for 17 points in that one win. P.W.O.P.
will need more production from their D if they're
to get past Wild Card Week for a second consecutive
season. As for the Figs, they're sitting pretty,
having just swept the season series with the
Brewmeisters en route to claiming their first
Eastern title. They have a two-game lead over
the Western leader for the No. 1 seed, so the
only immediate thing to play for is history.
Can they become the league's first 12-1 team?

Jody's Colossal
Waste of Time just got punched in the gut – twice
– and must now head out to Purgatory Field
to meet up with the feisty Irwin Hellions. It's
bad enough that Jody was rolled up by The Pimps
59-37 last week, but then the C.W.O.T. lost
their division champion status to the Figs
with three games still to go in the regular season.
The good news is that their next win
will clinch a playoff berth. Getting that
in the Hellhole may be a tall order though, as
Jody is merely 1-4 in an opponent's home stadium
this season.
Then again, the flip side of Jody's road woes
are the Hellions' troubles at home. Once dominant
at the Hellhole, Irwin has dropped three straight
home games. A one-point victory over Pirk in
Oil Town last week has kept alive the Hellions'
hopes of returning to the playoffs for the first
time since 2005. They've already matched their
win total from each of the past two seasons,
but they'll still need a win or two more to punch
their official playoff ticket.

A possible Draft
Bowl preview comes to us from En Fuego Field,
where the 2-8 Piana Raze host the 2-8 Pimps in
the week's final interdivisional contest. Both
clubs sit all alone in their respective division's
cellars, but The Pimps have actually shown some
life of late. Having just crushed Jody in Week
10, the Feathered Ones have won two
of their past four. Piana, meanwhile, has gone
0-4 over that same span and is in danger of making
its first DB trip since 2002.
Kurt Warner and Adrian Peterson have led the
mini-resurgence for The Pimps, each having twice posted double-digit
point games over the last two weeks. Although
not in the playoff picture, they get to take
their shot at each of the other three outside
teams (Piana, Sims, Machines) and hopefully build
on their recent success to close out their season. The
Raze only wish they had one stud QB and one stub
RB to hang their hat on. Too many poor choices
have doomed the Raze for ten weeks; hard to believe
that may change now.

MACHINES 38, at Thomas 34 |

For the first
time since Week 5, the Game of the Week is an
all-Western affair, as the division-leading Thomas'
Bock Boys visit the sub-.500 Abstract Machines.
No team has been hotter than the Bock Boys, who
are riding a five-game winning streak that has
catapulted them back atop the division. The Machines
had just eeked back into the playoff picture
with a pair of road wins before being shocked
by the Sims Stereco at home last week.
After a sluggish 1-2 start, the Boys management
sent a message to the team by dealing away receivers
Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson. They got practically
nothing in return (an implosive Derrick Anderson
and gimpy Carson Palmer), but the team responded
nonetheless, winning six of their past seven
games. Now all alone in first place, the Bock
Boys will get every chance to successfully defend
their division title by finishing out against
the fourth, third, and second place teams in
West, respectively.
The Machines have to be wondering what hit them
last week. A Stereco team that hadn't done much
of anything all season long finally woke up and
took it out on the unsuspecting Machines, pummeling
them 46-20. The loss dropped the AMs back on
the wrong side of the playoff cutoff, and they'll
need to rally to extend their playoff streak.
They've beaten the Boys once already this season
but have failed to ever record a season sweep.
There's no better time to make some history like
the present.
