Week 11 Previews

Jody's C.W.O.T. at Sims Stereco
(6 - 4)   (7 - 3)
series history: Jody leads 13-7
last meeting: Week 6
Sims 18, JODY 56

A very interesting Week 11 kicks off with a battle of two winning clubs (a true rarity in this particular season) as Jody's Colossal Waste of Time visits the Sims Stereco. The defending Eastern Division C.W.O.T. have had their struggles in 2006, but they have become playoff-eligible following consecutive wins over Draft Bowl candidates Thomas' Bock Boys and the Naughty Figs. The Stereco – enjoying quite a revival season – are second place in the East but are coming off a loss to the Abstract Machines and now find themselves two games back of Anderson with three to play.

Sims can't afford to be caught looking forward, however. Their lone divisional loss on the season was to the C.W.O.T. back in The Vortex, and another loss to Jody would give the outright head-to-head tiebreaker to the Pewter & Black. A Stereco win, on the other hand, would assure Sims a home playoff game – a feat they've enjoyed only once in their ten-year history (a Wild Card loss to the Poststructural Spiritualists in 1999).

Anderson Brewmeisters at The Pimps
(9 - 1)   (4 - 6)
series history: tied 9-9
last meeting: Week 2
Pimps 26, at ANDERSON 37

The Anderson Brewmeisters take their league-best record on the road to start a three-week binge on divisional play as they visit The 4-6 Pimps. The Brewmeisters have won five straight coming into this one and could wrap up the Eastern Division crown with a victory paired with a Stereco loss. The Pimps are riding a bit of momentum of their own, having upended the West-leading Raze last week.

With their Week 10 win over Thomas, the Brewmeisters have wrapped up their first ever five-game seasonal sweep of the Western Division. Combined with The Pimps' unblemished record in interdivisional play, the two teams are a perfect 9-0 against the West, yet The Pimps trail the Brewskies in the East by a whopping five games. The reason is simple: Anderson is 4-1 in divisional play while The Pimps are sitting on 0-6. If The Feathered Ones are to have any chance at making the playoffs, they'll need to get rid of that goose egg in the divisional win column. Doing it against LaDainian Tomlinson's team might be a tall order, however. During Anderson's current win streak, LT has scored 19, 11, 21, 19, and 20 points. By contrast, only one Pimp offensive starter (Damon Huard in Week 9) has managed to top LT's low of 11 points in that same span.

But of course offense has never been The 2006 Pimps' calling card. The home team will likely need another heroic effort from their Bears defense to have a shot at pulling off the upset. For Anderson, given it's lofty spot atop the current postseason seedings, this will in all likely-hood be their final road game of the season; they'll close out with two at home before possibly hosting a Championship Week game.

Abstract Machines at Naughty Figs
(4 - 6)   (3 - 7)
series history: Figs lead 4-2
last meeting: Week 7, 2005
FIGS 29, vs. Machines 7

The Abstract Machines pay a visit to the Naughty Figs for the lone interdivisional contest on the slate for Week 11. The defending Super Bowl Champs have had a tough title defense thus far, and they find themselves still two wins short of an opportunity to to defend their Lombardi Trophy in the playoffs. They may not be sweating it too bad, however; this time last year, the Machines were just a half-game better at 4-5-1 before going 2-1 to close out the season and eventually sweep through the playoffs.

The Figs are up against a wall, needing to win out over the final three weeks to become playoff eligible. Magic 8-Ball says, "looks unlikely", with Clinton Portis now lost for the year and Matt Hasselbeck and Joe Horn both banged up. We know the Figs have big games in them (three, to date), but there's been no indication they can string them together.

Thomas' Bock Boys at Irwin Hellions
(3 - 7)   (3 - 6 - 1)
series history: Irwin leads 10-4
last meeting: Week 5
Irwin 36, at THOMAS 37

The first of two must-see Western Division showdowns originates from Purgatory Field, where the three-win Irwin Hellions host the three-win Thomas' Bock Boys. That's right – it's a playoff elimination grudge match! One of these clubs (or possibly both in the case of a tie) will be officially out of playoff contention after this week.

This would be new (and unwanted) territory for the Boys from Bockville. Since entering the league in 2000, Thomas has made the playoff field each and every year. The last two seasons have been close calls (appearing as the No. 6 seed), but bottom has finally seemed to fall out from under the Bock Boys. The Hellions descent into the standings was far less predictable. Irwin, the league's most winningest team, has reached Championship Week in each of the past three seasons (advancing to win a Super Bowl in 2004). The ground attack that was a staple of their success is suddenly gone, leaving Donovan McNabb and his receivers to try and keep them on the playoff periphery.

History is on Irwin's side in this one: Thomas is 0-7 lifetime at the Hellhole.

Game of the Week
P.W.O.P. at Piana Raze
(5 - 5)   (5 - 4 - 1)
series history: Piana leads 12-8
last meeting: Week 4
Piana 48, at P.W.O.P. 51

Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ and the Piana Raze look to sort out the Western Division lead as they complete their season series under the primetime lights at En Fuego Field. P.W.O.P. snapped a two-game losing streak with a home win over Irwin last week, while the Raze saw their two-game winning streak snapped on the road against The Pimps, closing the gap between the two division contenders to just a half-game.

Pirk is without a doubt the 2006 success story in the Western Division. After consecutive Draft Bowl appearances, the Profiteer$ are a win away from a likely playoff berth. And while first-overall pick Reggie Bush has been a non-factor, second rounder Phillip Rivers has quickly developed into the leader of the Oil Men. Undrafted rookie receiver Marques Colston has also been a huge boost to the offense, averaging over 10 points per game over the past three weeks.

The Raze were hoping to build off of last season's Championship Week appearance, but they struggled out of the gate in 2006. The offense started to click by midseason, however, with Marc Bulger, Larry Johnson, and Tiki Barber consistently putting up big games. Add to that a receiving corps of Terrell Owens, Reggie Wayne, and Roy Williams, and the Raze have developed quite an offense. Of course, all those big names have translated into only 5 wins for Piana – the same number as P.W.O.P.

The winner of this game will thus become playoff eligible. With there being three teams from the East that already have more wins than Piana or Pirk, whomever wins the division will catapult to the No. 2 postseason seed above other teams that will possibly have better overall records. A Raze win this week will push their division lead to one-and-a-half games with only two to play. A P.W.O.P. victory will give them a nice season-sweep of Piana and leapfrog them a half-game ahead of the Raze.
