Week 5 Recaps
What's That Smell?

The Stereco blitz past the Brewmeisters to move into first place, while the Bock Boys get some Home Field love. All this and more in...

The Week That Was in Fantasy League Football

Anderson Brewmeisters at Sims Stereco
6   31

The Sims Stereco may have finally put the league on notice that they are, in fact, for real in 2006. Sims matched last season's entire win total (4) with an inspired 31-6 victory over the previously undefeated Anderson Brewmeisters.

The Stereco took apart the Brewskies with near-Herculean effort on defense and special teams; their Jaguars D stripped 29 points away from Anderson, while Robbie Gould booted 16 points for the home team. Newcomer receiver Brian Berrian led the offense with 8 points, which was better than an single offensive starter from the other sideline. Anderson's heavy hitters Peyton Manning, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Steve Smith were held to 7, 4, and 3 points, respectively. The Brewmeisters did get 18 points from their new Chargers defense, but that only kept the game from being more of a blowout.

Both clubs now sit at 4-1 atop the Eastern Division, with Sims having claimed the initial tiebreaker advantage. Sims has also built a three-game winning streak, their first since their Super Bowl season of 2002.

Irwin Hellions at Thomas' Bock Boys
36   37

Don't look now, but Thomas' Bock Boys are regaining some swagger. A week after crushing the defending Super Bowl champion Machines, the Boys do just enough to trip up the visiting Irwin Hellions, 37-36. Thomas' Patriots defense set the tone for the win with 12 points, and placekicker Jeff Wilkins posted his second straight 10+ outing. The Hellions' Donovan McNabb led all scorers with 14 points, eclipsing a strong 10-point outing from Bock Boy QB Rex Grossman. The rest of the Hellion offense struggled, however, leaving them in a 12-point hole heading into Sunday Night. Kicker Nate Kaeding had a stellar 11-point game in trying to rally the visitors, but they fell a point shy of quieting the rowdy Bockville faithful.

Irwin played the game a man short, as three of his five receivers were out on bye. From the other sideline, Thomas' Kevan Barlow made the start but failed to produce a single point, neutralizing the lineup advantage. The loss drops Irwin to 2-2-1, while the win elevates the Bock Boys to 2-3, a mere half-game back in the West.

Jody's C.W.O.T. at Abstract Machines
19   14

This year's rematch from last year's Super Bowl turned into a defensive struggle that saw Jody's Colossal Waste of Time claim a 19-14 win over the Abstract Machines. Jody was led offensively by halfback Frank Gore with 9 points, but starting quarterback Charlie Frye caved under the pressure and actually cost his team a pair of points. The Machine's Tom Brady was his usually cool and collected self, leading the way with 9 points of his own. Ultimately, Jody's Panthers defense provided the difference, besting the Abstract's Ravens unit 19-12.

The win is Jody's third in four games and moves them back above .500 at 3-2. The Machines have now dropped two straight to fall to 2-3 and out of first place in the Western Division.

The Pimps at P.W.O.P.
24   10

The Pimps had finally had enough. After losing three straight games to divisional opponents, the Feathered Ones headed out west and put a Hotard Hall beat-down on Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$. The Pimps played their most complete game of the season and were led – not surprisingly – by their stellar Bears defense, which mobbed Pirk of 28 points. Fred Taylor (11 points) and Joey Galloway (9) kept busy putting points on their end of the scoreboard. The Profiteer$ rallied behind a strong defensive effort of their own (49ers with 19 points). Byron Leftwich had another strong game for P.W.O.P. with 9 points, but too many other offensive starters were held to 4 or less.

The win is The Pimps' third straight over the Oil Men, and the result leaves both teams at 2-3 after five weeks, which is a full win better than where they were at this time last year.

Piana Raze at Naughty Figs
36   29

Possibly the ugliest game of the year was played out last week between the Piana Raze and Naughty Figs; they were by far the two lowest overall performances of the week. Someone, of course, had to win, and in this case it was the shorthanded Raze claiming a 36-29 victory. Playing without an active defense, the Raze were lifted with 11 points from Marc Bulger and a combined 15 from Larry Johnson and Tiki Barber. The Figs were led by Neil Rackers with 8, but four other starters failed to reach the 4-point mark.

The win – which actually does count – moves Piana (2-2-1) into a tie with the Hellions atop the West. The Figs drop to a league-worst 1-4; dating back to last year, the Figgies have now lost 7 of their past 9 contests.
