Week 5 Recaps
Brewmeisters Outlast Raze

LaDainian Tomlinson pushes Anderson past Piana on Monday Night, while the Hellions and Bock Boys both win their fourth. All this and more in...

The Week That Was in Fantasy League Football

Piana Raze at Anderson Brewmeisters
35   41

The Anderson Brewmeisters bested the Piana Raze, 41-35, at Saint Arnold Stadium in a battle of division co-leaders. Both teams fought to a tie on Sunday afternoon, with fresh recruits contributing in big ways. Terry Glenn gave life to a struggling Raze receiving corps, scoring a team-best 12 points, while Anderson's new Lions defense stripped 12 away from the visitors. Piana also got big days from Jamal Lewis (9 points) and Kevin Curtis (6), while Brewmeister receivers Torry Holt (9) and Steve Smith (12) ripped up the Raze secondary.

With the game tied heading into Sunday night, Piana's Bengals defense suffered its worst outing of the season, recording only three points. Roughly 24 hours later, Brewmeister superman LaDainian Tomlinson ran past that small deficit with a strong 9-point effort, giving Anderson the win. The Brewmeisters have finally climbed out of their 0-2 hole and sit alone atop the Eastern Division at 3-2. Piana, meanwhile, suffers its first loss since opening week and fall a game off the pace in the West with an identical mark of 3-2.

Jody's C.W.O.T. at Irwin Hellions
22   29

Playing a few gears lower than they had in previous weeks, the Irwin Hellions still played well enough to score a 29-22 victory over the visiting Jody's Colossal Waste of Time. With two receivers being shut out completely, Irwin relied on a solid ground game (17 combined points from Edgerrin James and Domanick Davis) and spectacular special teams and defense; Nate Kaeding had a solid 10-point outing, while the Buccaneer defense made its triumphant return to the Hellions with a 17-point mauling of the C.W.O.T..

Jody, who also had a receiver kept of the stat sheet, did get a combined 21 points from its Rams duo of Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson. Yet with its defense and kicker only countering with16 total, the C.W.O.T. found itself on the wrong end of the scoreboard for the third consecutive week. Now sitting at 4-1, Irwin is off to its best start since 2001.

P.W.O.P. at Thomas' Bock Boys
19   40

Thomas' Bock Boys seemed ripe for the picking, having a long list of talented players sitting out on bye. The substitute starters "Cowboy'd Up", however, and the Boys blitzed past the visiting P.W.O.P., 40-19, in a Western Division showdown. Drew Bledsoe ripped up the Profiteer$ with 16 points from behind center, and Thomas' Cowboy defense sacked Pirk for another 15 points. Those 31 points (along with two more for home field advantage) would have been enough to down the struggling Profiteer$, who only had one starter over 5 points and a defense that managed only 1.

Thomas rebounds nicely from last week's loss to Irwin with the win, and the Boys (4-1) keep pace with the Hellions in the standings. Pirk, meanwhile, has now gone three weeks without a win and drops into sole possession of the Western Division's basement.

The Pimps at Naughty Figs
15   31

In an Eastern Division battle of sliding teams, the Naughty Figs scored an encouraging victory over the visiting Pimps, 31-15. As was the case with their only other win of the season, the Figs were catapulted to victory behind a stellar defensive performance. Dwight Freeney and the Colts D terrorized the Pimps' offense for 33 game-changing points, which were 27 more than the visitor's Jaguars unit. The Pimps' Shaun Alexander continued to shine, however, scoring an offensive game-high of 13 points. Figs' signalcaller Matt Hasselbeck finished a point behind with 12, but it is clear the victory should be credited to the defense. The loss is The Pimp's fourth straight and sends them tumbling to a league-worst record of 1-4, while the win snaps the Naughties' three-game skid and lifts them to 2-3.

Abstract Machines at Sims Stereco
32   25

In a game someone had to win, the Abstract Machines finally managed to pull away fro the Sims Stereco Monday night to to claim a 32-25 interdivisional victory. Both clubs played a player short and struggled to post much of anything. The Stereco's Saints defense – so important in last week's win over the Figs – were shut out altogether, and three Machines starters managed to only combine for only 4 points. The game was decided in prime time, where Ben Roethlisberger (making his first start for the Machines) and Willie Parker beat out the Stereco's Drew Brees 12-5. The win is the second straight for the Mechanical Ones, who have finally even up their record at 2-2-1. Sims continues its pattern of alternating wins with losses, dropping to 2-3, but only a game back in the Eastern race.
