Week 2 Previews

Anderson Brewmeisters at Sims Stereco
(0 - 1)   (0 - 1)
series history: tied 7-7
last meeting: Week 6, 2004
ANDERSON 48, at Sims 29

The Anderson Brewmeisters take to the road to visit the Sims Stereco in a battle of winless Eastern Division teams. The defending division champion Brewmeisters were shackled at home last week by the Figs, while the Stereco took a beating on the road against Jody. Both teams realize another loss and an 0-2 divisional record so early in the season could put a serious hurt in their division title aspirations.

Anderson comes into Week 2 knowing they played well enough to beat over half the league last week, but the Figs' monumental defensive effort kept them out of the win column. So look for Peyton Manning, LT, and the Patriots defense to try and take their frustrations out on the Stereco, who are off to a slow start once again. Sims can't afford to have four offensive starters combine for only 8 points if they hope to hang with high-octane Brewskies. Over the last three years, the two-game series has been a sweep, so a win here could be telling down the road.

Thomas' Bock Boys at Naughty Figs
(1 - 0)   (1 - 0)
series history: Thomas leads 4-2
last meeting: Wild Card Week, 2004
Thomas 21, at FIGS 34

The Naughty Figs host Thomas' Bock Boys for their home opener in an interdivisional contest of undefeated teams. These two last met in the playoffs a year ago with the Figs ending the Bock Boys season on this very same field. Thomas has regained some confidence following a hard-fought win over Piana last week and now looks to avenge that playoff loss. The Figs, meanwhile, are already standing tall following their road upset of Anderson.

Randy Moss had a shining debut for the Boys, scorching the Raze for 10 points. Javon Walker can't say the same, however, as he injured his ACL in his first start for Thomas and will miss the remainder of the season. Both clubs are sporting quarterbacks looking for redemption following sub par weeks. Thomas' Daunte Culpepper cost his team 4 points last week, while the Figs' Chad Pennington only mustered 1 in the victory over Anderson. Of course, if the defense can score 30+ points again, it may not matter.

Irwin Hellions at P.W.O.P.
(1 - 0)   (0 - 1)
series history: Irwin leads 11-6
last meeting: Week 8, 2004
PROFITEER$ 33, at Irwin 23

Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ host the Irwin Hellions for their 2005 home opener in Oil Town, USA. The Profiteer$ took it on the chin last week, getting knocked around by The Pimps in an interdivisional dual. The defending champs statistically played worse than P.W.O.P., but they still managed to score a win over the Machines in the Hellhole. Despite the difference in records, both are looking for improvement in Week 2.

Irwin won their fourth Western Division title last season on the strength of an 8-5 record. Their division mark was only 4-4, however, and that included a two-game sweep at the hands of the Profiteer$. After dominating the series for so long, Irwin has actually dropped five of their last six to Pirk, and they will need a lot better effort than last week if they're to stop that slide. The Texans duo of Andre Johnson and Domanick Davis will have to do a lot better than the combined 1 point they managed last week.

Despite the allure, P.W.O.P. may have a hard time giving Brett Favre the start against his former team given the veteran's minus-2 point effort from a week ago. And while the team may miss Randy Moss (the entire receiving corps only mustered 8 points against The Pimps), the Eagles defense had a stellar 17-point outing and could be a difference-maker in this divisional tilt.

Abstract Machines at Piana Raze
(0 - 1)   (0 - 1)
series history: tied 8-8
last meeting: Week 8, 2004
PIANA 54, at Machines 39

The Abstract Machines visit En Fuego Field and the PIana Raze in a battle of winless Western Division foes. The Machines are coming off a sub-standard effort that resulted in a 27-16 loss at the hands of the Hellions, while Piana is licking its wounds from a narrow 25-23 defeat to Thomas in Bockville. Neither club wants to start 0-2 in the division.

The Machines might already be questioning their strategy to make Matt Stover a first-round selection last month, as the kicker promptly missed all three attempts in his debut last week. The Ravens zero-point stat line was arguably worse, but it's hard to imagine Ray Lewis and company won't snap back from that. Piana will need more production from Trent Green and his receivers to help keep focus away from the halfbacks, who accounted for over half the team's offensive total last week. Plus, playing in the friendly confines of En Fuego Field at least guarantees they won't lose on account of home field advantage again.

Game of the Week
The Pimps at Jody's C.W.O.T.
(1 - 0)   (1 - 0)
series history: Pimps lead 12-5
last meeting: Week 12, 2004
JODY 40, at Pimps 17

Game of the Week goes somewhat "old school" for Week 2 as The Pimps visit Jody's Colossal Waste of Time in a tilt of undefeated Eastern Division rivals. Historically, The Pimps–Jody feud has been one of the best, with both franchises having won three Eastern Division titles. The series faded somewhat last season with Jody's struggles and eventual collapse into the Draft Bowl, but both clubs have started strong in 2005.

The Pimps posted the best overall team performance in Week 1 while crushing the Profiteer$. Half of that winning lineup was comprised of players drafted just last month, and there seems to be at least a possibility that the lone benchwarmer of the draft class – Kerry Collins – could see action against the C.W.O.T. given Jake Delhomme's 2-point effort against Pirk.

Not to be outdone, the C.W.O.T. tied for the second-best effort from last week. Marc Bulger and Deuce McAllister combined for 20 points in the win over Sims, but Jody will need more production from the supporting cast, which averaged only 4 points per player (excluding Jeff Wilkins' 13 points). 2004's breakout star Antonio Gates, who served a team-enforced one game suspension last week, could see his first action of the season.

In the midst of an otherwise miserable season a year ago, Jody did score a monumental win for the franchise; they defeated the Pimps 40-17 in their last meeting, thereby snapping a staggering 12-game regular season losing streak to the Feathered Ones. Can they make it two in a row?
