Wild Card Week Recaps
Figs Send Bock Boys Home

The first-time Wild Card Figs eliminate the defending Super Bowl Champs, and the Machines do a (big) number on The Pimps. All this and more in...

The Week That Was in Fantasy League Football

Thomas' Bock Boys at Naughty Figs
21   34

The Naughty Figs made the most of the franchise's first ever playoff berth, knocking off the defending champion Thomas' Bock Boys 34-21 in the first of two Wild Card duels.

Having only won one of their previous five games, the battered Bock Boys finally ran out of gas at the worst possible time, posting a season-low performance for the playoff's opening weekend. Halfback Reuben Droughns was benched after fumbling twice (losing one) in his first four carries and finished with only a single point. Thomas Jones managed only 4 more points from the backfield and the Bock Boy ground game disappeared. Daunte Culpepper and Muhsim Muhammed came through for the visitors, scoring 8 points apiece. Keenan McCardell and Tony Gonzales, however, were held in check, combining for only 6 points, and placekicker Jeff Wilkins had a season-low 1 point.

The Figs hammered their guests with a punishing and consistent ground attack. Willis McGahee (12 points) and Clinton Portis (11) each found the endzone twice while chewing up tons of clock. Their success helped overcome quarterback Chad Pennington's failures – three interceptions and a season-worst (minus)1 point. Joe Horn still managed to have a decent day at receiver with 7 points, but Jerry Porter and Roy Williams combined for only 3. Even though the Figs' Seahawks defense was narrowly clipped by Thomas' Eagles unit (9-7), kicker Josh Brown fared much better than Jeff Wilkins, kicking for 8 points in the victory.

With the loss, Thomas finishes its title defense season at 6-6-2, the lowest win total in the franchise's five-year history. The Naughty Figs extend their own record for wins in a season to 9, and they take their career 1-0 playoff record on the road to meet the Western Division Champion Irwin Hellions next week.

The Pimps at Abstract Machines
9   52

The Abstract Machines took out their frustrations of not winning the Western Division by hammering of The Pimps 52-9 in the week's second Wild Card contest.

The visiting Pimps got off to a hot start thanks to a successful running game. Shaun Alexander led the team with 10 points, and former Machine Corey Dillon rumbled for an additional 6. Points thereafter, however, were much harder to come by. David Carr and Rod Smith each had 5, but Isaac Bruce, Jason Witten, and kicker Kris Brown combined for a mere 6 more. The Pimps' Giants defense did their best to keep them in the game, posting their best number in five weeks with 13 points.

Another player who had his best performance in months, however, was Machine quarterback Tom Brady, who led the Abstracts' offense with 11 points. Halfback Curtis Martin was reasonably contained with 6 points, but Jerome Bettis ran for one score and threw for another in rolling up 9 of his own. Moreover, all three receivers found the endzone as Darrell Jackson (10), Donald Driver (7), and Marvin Harrison (4) combined for 21 points through the air. Perhaps the biggest blow to The Pimps was not from the Machines' offense fireworks, but from the defense and special teams. Their Ravens defense bombarded The Pimps for 27 huge points, while placekicker Morten Anderson booted a personal season-best of 12 in the runaway victory.

The Pimps finish the 2004 campaign at 7-7, improving upon last year's effort by a playoff berth and an additional win. They struggled mightily down the stretch, winning only a pair of contests against the playoff-less Stereco in their final nine games. The Machines, meanwhile, improve to 9-5 and will meet up with the top-seeded Anderson Brewmeisters at Saint Arnold Stadium next week. It will be their first Championship Week appearance since 2001 and third overall.

Draft Bowl VIII Recap
P.W.O.P. at Jody's C.W.O.T.
32   54

Jody's Colossal Waste of Time rallied past the visiting Wicked Oil Profiteer$ 54-32 to claim a victory in their first-ever Draft Bowl. Down four points after Sunday, Drew Bennett and – to a much less extent – Chris Brown catapulted the C.W.O.T. to a runaway victory on Monday Night.

Pirk built the early lead thanks to 9 points from kicker Jason Elam and Byron Leftwich, who got the nod at quarterback over Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer. The halfback duo of Ahman Green and Rudi Johnson were held out of the endzone while combining for 9 points. Surprisingly, the Profiteer receivers that had been dangerously hot the past few weeks went cold fast, as Randy Moss (6 points), Brandon Stokley (3), and Hines Ward (2) were held comfortably in check. Perhaps the biggest reason for the late-game collapse was the Profiteer$' Lions defense, who had a fairly dismal 2-point outing and couldn't bury the C.W.O.T..

Jody managed to stay in the game thanks largely to Deuce McAllister, who led the Pewter & Black attack with 12 points on Sunday. Placekicker Josh Scobee had 8, and quarterback Aaron brooks had a modest 5 points, but heralded receivers Antonio Gates and Javon Walker were both held to season-lows, scoring only a point apiece. Jody's Dolphins defense managed to strip 6 away from Pirk and bring the C.W.O.T. to within four as Sunday's action came to a close. Then, on Monday Night, wideout Drew Bennett lit up P.W.O.P. for 233 yards, 3 touchdowns, and a week's best 21 points to lead Jody to a Draft Bowl victory. Chris Brown managed to run for 5 more in cleanup duty.

The loss drops the Profiteer$ 2004 record to 4-9-1, their worst campaign since going 3-11 in 2000. With the win, Jody – last year's Eastern Division champion – has secured the first overall pick in next year's draft. Despite ending the season with a franchise-low mark of 4-10, the C.W.O.T. finished strong, winning two of their final three games.
