The Week That Was in Fantasy League Football

Irwin Hellions at P.W.O.P.
29   39

It may not have been as pretty as some of their losses, but Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ finally broke into the win column this week, upsetting the Irwin Hellions 39-29 in Oil Town, USA.

After two weeks of incredible play, the Hellions finally lost some steam. Donovan McNabb still had a game-high 14 points, but halfback Domanick davis was limited to 2 with an ankle injury, kicker Todd Peterson missed his only field goal attempt, and the Bucs defense managed just 6 points. The Profiteer$ were led by Randy Moss and Hines Ward, with 12 and 8 points respectively. Kicker Jason Elam scored 11, but Steve McNair was held to 2 before leaving with injury and the Titans defense managed only 6 of its own.

Despite those limitations, P.W.O.P. had enough firepower to hand the Hellions their first loss of the season and – more importantly – to avoid a fourth 0-3 start for the historically slow-starting franchise.

Piana Raze at Thomas' Bock Boys
34   33

The Piana Raze finally snapped out of the their post-Super Bowl slump, stealing a dramatic win away from Thomas' Bock Boys at Bockyard Stadium. The Raze, who lost to the Boys 45-44 in Super Bowl VII, used a Monday night rally to edge the champs 34-33 in the first return bout.

Much like their Super Bowl encounter, Thomas exploded out of the gate behind Daunte Culpepper (17 points) and Thomas Jones (13 points). Jones got the start in place of a gimpy Priest Holmes, who earned Super Bowl MVP honors in their last meeting. Unfortunately, some of the support help on offense failed to get the job done, with three of the starters combining for only 2 points. The Raze seized this opening and hammered the Bock Boys with double-digit efforts from Marc Bulger (13), Jamal Lewis (14), and Reggie Wayne (12). The real heroics came when Randy McMichael and Michael Clayton – both fresh off the street – combined for 5 huge Monday night points to give the Raze the narrowest of victories.

The win is the first of the season for Piana, who now sits side-by-side with Thomas at 1-2.The home loss is Thomas' first in Bockville since a Week 4 defeat last year to – you guessed it – the Piana Raze.

The Pimps at Jody's C.W.O.T.
43   38

Another year, another Pimps defeat of Jody's Colossal Waste of Time. The Feathered Ones made it 12 straight regular-season victories over the Pewter & Black with a 43-38 victory in the Vortex.

Shaun Alexander led the visitors with 13 points, and David Carr and Isaac Bruce each had 7. Kicker Kris Brown had his best game of the young season with 12 points, and The Pimps built an early lead over their rivals. Yet the C.W.O.T. stormed back with 10 apiece from Aaron Brooks and Chris Brown before Javon Walker really put the hammer down with a herculean 17-point effort. Jody held a 1-point lead heading into Monday night, but The Pimps' Cowboys defense outperformed Jody's Laveranues Coles 8-2 to extend the lopsided series winning streak.

The Pimps remain undefeated in 2004 and have now won five straight games dating back to last season. The defending division champion C.W.O.T., meanwhile, have dropped two straight divisional games following a Week 1 victory over Piana. What's worse (and seemingly unfair), Jody lost yet another player to injury, as Lamar Gordon is done for the year.

Naughty Figs at Abstract Machines
38   20

The Naughty Figs continued their hot start with an impressive 38-20 road victory over the Abstract Machines. Playing a near perfect game, the Figs had five of their six offensive starters score 7 or more points.

Quarterback Joey Harrington – recently brought over from the Bock Boys – threw for 9 points while rookie Roy Williams had his second straight double-digit effort (13). Kicker Josh Brown had 10 and the newly-signed Seahawk defense victimized the Machines for 23 points. The home team played well in defeat, with seven starters scoring 5 or more points and their Ravens defense stripping 18 from the Figs, but it wouldn't be enough. The loss drops the Machines back under .500 while the Figs improve to 3-0 for the first time since starting 4-0 in 2001.

Sims Stereco at Anderson Brewmeisters
11   54

In a week of several great team performances, the Anderson Brewmeisters had the best in routing the visiting Sims Stereco 54-11 to earn their first win of the season.

Peyton Manning had a career day with an amazing 23 points on five touchdowns, or 24 points more than the Stereco's Michael Vick could muster. Furthermore, Anderson's Falcons defense – picked up to start in place of their Patriots "D" out on bye – sank the Stereco with 27 points, or 28 more than Sims' Rams squad. Sims only true highlight came from kicker David Akers, who booted a team-high 13 points in the blowout. Both clubs now sit at 1-2, sharing that subpar record with five other teams in the FLF
