Week 10 Recaps
A Heavyweight Bout

There may be no better game played this year than the one between P.W.O.P. and Thomas, and Sims sticks it to the Brewmeisters. All this and more in...

The Week That Was in Fantasy League Football

P.W.O.P. at Thomas' Bock Boys
41   54

Editor's Note: It isn't often a hyped game actually meets its expectations, and even rarer for such a game to exceed its own hype. But Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ and Thomas' Bock Boys turned in a real doozie from Bockville...

In the highest (gross) scoring game in the history of the league, Thomas' Bock Boys outlasted Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ for a marathon 54-41 decision at Bockyard Stadium. After two days of punch and counter-punch, Thomas emerged with an enormous season sweep over the explosive Profiteer$.

The game opened with Priest Holmes quickly schooling the P.W.O.P. front seven for 14 points. Pirk countered with 10 from quarterback Steve McNair and 9 from receiver Hines Ward. Undeterred, Thomas got 9 from Keenan McCardell and another 7 from Tony Gonzales. Pirk then landed a punishing knockdown with 30 points from its Titans defense. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper brought the Bock Boys back off the mat with a season-high 19 points Sunday afternoon. Receiver David Boston got 7 more, but was ultimately shown up by Profiteer Randy Moss with 9 of his own.

Trailing heading into Sunday Night, Thomas finally scored a knockdown with another season-high performance -- this time from kicker Jeff Wilkins and his 18 points. The Profiteer$ had once last shot heading into Monday Night, but Ahman Green's monster 16-point effort was neutralized by Thomas' Eagles defense and their 17 point assault, preserving the victory for the home team.

Both clubs now sit at 6-4, tied for second in the Western Division. For the Profiteer$, it is their second straight loss following a 6-2 start. Perhaps more disturbing, they have still scored over 40 points in both of those losses. The Bock Boys, meanwhile, have now won five of their last six and three straight over the Profiteer$.

Irwin Hellions at Abstract Machines
5   45

The Abstract Machines routed the visiting Irwin Hellions 45-5 to continue their late-season playoff push. The wins gives the Machines their first ever season sweep over Irwin, and the 40-point margin is also the largest over their hellacious Western Division rivals.

The Machines jumped out of the gate quickly, as Trent Green torched the Hellion secondary for 16 points in his return from the bye week. Undrafted rookie Anquan Boldin benefited from Green's strong play with 9 points, and halfback T.J. Duckett found the endzone twice for 8 points. Domanick Davis -- also an undrafted rookie -- led the visiting Hellions with 9 points, but the rest of the offense struggled; three starters were held to 3 points or less. The Machines' Ravens defense out muscled Irwin's Buccaneer unit for the second time this season. Following up on their 23-10 showing in Week 2, the Ravens decisively crushed the Bucs -- and the Hellions -- 28-13 in the rematch.

Both clubs now sit at 5-5, but the Machines have claimed the all important 2-0 head-to-head tiebreaker with the playoffs drawing near.

Anderson Brewmeisters at Sims Stereco
4   19

For the second time this season, the Anderson Brewmeisters followed up a big victory over Jody with a disappointing loss to the Sims Stereco. This time around, the visiting Brewmeisters were ambushed by familiar faces, as their one-time St. Louis defense came back to exact some revenge for being shown the door three weeks ago.

Signed earlier in the week by Sims to replace the inactive Bronco defense, the Rams tore into their former teammates for a season-high (and game-turning) 40 points. For those keeping score at home, that was 41 points more than Anderson's suddenly inept Vikings defense produced. Aside from the record-setting defensive performance, the defending world champs did very little to produce points. The six offensive starters and placekicker combined for a mere 13 points in the win. Anderson's LaDainian Tomlinson covered that by himself with a 16-point effort. Peyton Manning tossed for 9 more, and kicker Mike Vanderjagt booted an additional 11. But it was the inability of the Vikings defense to produce any points for the third straight week that ultimately cost the Brewmeisters the game.

The loss drops Anderson to 5-5 and knocks them from atop the Eastern Division. The win gives Sims a season sweep over Anderson and moves them to 4-6 as they try and make another late-season playoff push.

Piana Raze at The Pimps
29   24

The Piana Raze snapped a five-game losing streak to The Pimps with a 29-24 road victory over the struggling defending Eastern division champs. Having not won in the series since 1998, the Raze got big games from Brad Johnson and Santana Moss to finally down The Pimps.

Johnson had 11 points and Moss a game-high 12 to help overcome five Raze turnovers. Despite four fumbles between them, Jamal Lewis and Tiki Barber combined for 10 points. Piana's Panther defense had one of their better games with 12 points, but The Pimps' aggressive Cowboy D posted 17. Pimp placekicker John Kasay had a stellar outing with 11 points, and halfback Shaun Alexander clocked in 8 more in the loss. Four other offensive starters, however, combined for only 6 additional points. Isaac Bruce, who played for the Raze in the previous six seasons, managed only a single point against his former club.

The win puts Piana back into the win column and moves them to a league-best 7-3 and a game ahead of Thomas and P.W.O.P. in the West. The Pimps conclude a disastrous 0-5 tour against the Western clubs and fall to 4-6 behind a second straight loss.

Naughty Figs at Jody's C.W.O.T.
34   36

Facing playoff elimination against Jody's Colossal Waste of Time, the Naughty Figs left it all on the field. Unfortunately for them, it just wasn't their field, as Home Field Advantage lifted the C.W.O.T. to a 36-34 victory.

The visiting Figs had a solid game on offense with three starters reaching double-digits. Fred Taylor, the lone starting halfback, scored a team high 14, while receiver Rod Gardner actually passed for a TD while posting 10 points of his own. Chad Pennington was also impressive in defeat, scoring 12 points while trying to rally the Figs. Jody kept up behind strong games from Moe Williams (14 points) and Laveranues Coles (10), but a game ball should go to the Chiefs defense. Making their C.W.O.T. debut, the Chiefs outshone the Figs' Bills unit 17-5. Things got dramatic Sunday night when C.W.O.T. QB Marc Bulger actually coughed up two points before being saved by Home Field.

The loss drops the Figs to a league worst record of 2-8 and sticks a fork in their playoff aspirations. In the four years since joining the league, the Figs have yet to make the playoffs. Jody, meanwhile, moves to 6-4 and back into first place in the Eastern Division.
