| For only the second time
in the six-year history of the league, the League Championship
Game will be contested by a pair of Wild Cards. The fifth-seeded
Sims Stereco posted the franchise's first two playoff victories
with road wins over P.W.O.P. and The Eastern Division Champion
Pimps to earn their spot. Third-seeded Jody's Colossal Waste
of Time makes its third appearance in the Big Game following
victories over Anderson and the Eastern Division Champion
Bock Boys.
Simply put, the Stereco are on fire. The Red and Gold have
won six straight games following an uninspired 3-6 start,
with the last four wins all coming on the road. Almost more
impressively, the last three of those were against opponents
with a combined regular season record of 26-11-2. With this
season already being the most successful in franchise history,
the Stereco look to run the table and bring the title home.
The C.W.O.T. been here before. It's almost like clockwork;
every two years Jody makes it into the League Championship
Game. This particular year, the C.W.O.T. stubbed their toe
on their way out of the regular season, dropping two straight
to land as a wild card instead of division champion. Jody
rebounded with an important win over Anderson (who beat the
C.W.O.T. in the only other all-Wild Card Super Bowl) before
downing Thomas in Bockville to push their record to a league-best
11-4.
These two teams made headlines in the off season with a trade
that sent Sims quarterback Aaron Brooks to the C.W.O.T. in
exchange for running back Stephen Davis. Brooks and his new
teammates won the first bout with the Stereco, 35-30, in Week
5, but Sims rolled up Jody 53-33 to close out the regular
season. Let's see how the two teams match up for Round Three:
QUARTERBACK
Aaron Brooks has been a tremendous spark for the C.W.O.T.
offense and has strengthened a position that has been historically
weak for the Pewter and Black. Although his production dropped
off a bit over the second half of the season, Brooks is coming
off a clutch 11-point effort last week against Thomas. For
the Stereco, the offense is in the capable hands of first-overall
draft pick Michael Vick. The first-year starter is averaging
over 10 points per game in Sims' current six-game win streak,
and has been superb since taking over full-time after splitting
time with Drew Bledsoe behind center. Advantage: Sims
RUNNING BACKS
Unfortunately for drama's sake, former C.W.O.T. back Stephen
Davis is out with injury for the Stereco, leaving Ricky Williams
and Garrison Hearst to pound the trenches. Another former
first-overall pick for Sims, Williams has finally emerged
as the dangerous half back everyone thought he would become.
Jody counters with veteran Eddie George and third-overall
draftee Deuce McAllister, who's arguably had as impressive
a first season as Vick. George posted one of the Super Bowl's
best individual showings two years ago, torching the Hellions
for 18 points in a losing effort. Advantage: Jody
RECEIVERS
Jody revived his receiving corps with a pair of key second-half
pickups. Quincy Morgan and Plaxico Burress (who was drafted
by Jody before being cut) joined long-time C.W.O.T. Tim Brown
to form a threatening group from the outside. Sims counters
with one of the best at the position in Terrell Owens. As
if Owens isn't enough, the Stereco also rotate Keyshawn Johnson,
Amani Toomer, and rookie tight end Jeremy Shockey to keep
opponents' on their toes. Advantage: Sims
KICKER
Both clubs sport solid kickers. In their two playoff games,
the Stereco's Davis Akers and Jody's Martin Gramatica have
been money, scoring 20 and 21 points, respectively. There
should be no let down here. Advantage: Even
DEFENSE
It's a very valid argument to say both of these clubs made
it to the Super Bowl riding their defense. Jody's Miami squad
has been spectacular down the stretch, scoring 19 points or
more in four of Jody's last five games. The big surprise comes
from the other sideline, where Sims' Giants defense has posted
its two best games over the past two weeks (both narrow, 3-point
wins for the Stereco). Are they playing above themselves?
Yes. Should we expect this to continue? No. In two games against
the C.W.O.T. this year, the Giants have managed a meager 6
points. Advantage: Jody
A lot of statistical signs lean towards the C.W.O.T.. They're
11-4 and playing in their third Super Bowl, not to mention
they own an impressive 8-4 lifetime record against the Stereco.
Maybe Jody's time has finally come. Yet Sims has made a season
out of bucking statistical trends, and one more upset is all
they need to join the likes of Piana, Anderson, and Irwin
as Super Bowl Champions. San Diego is ready to rock!
