Week 8 Previews

Anderson Brewmeisters at Jody's C.W.O.T.
(3 - 3 - 1)   (5 - 2)
series history: Anderson leads 8-3
last meeting: Week 4
Jody 32, at ANDERSON 76

Is there a better storyline than revenge? Jody's Colossal Waste of Time is eager to get another shot at the Anderson Brewmeisters, who embarrassed the then-undefeated C.W.O.T., 76-32, one month ago at Saint Arnold Stadium.

Brewmeisters LaDainian Tomlinson and Fred Taylor combined for 33 points in the rout last month, but L.T. will be sitting this one out on a bye. The very capable Charlie Garner will assume his role, and the C.W.O.T. defense could have its hands full again with the Brewmeister backfield. Offensively, Jody will counter with the likes of Aaron Brooks and Deuce McAllister, who came up huge in last week's win over Irwin. Defense played no part in the 44-point decision last month (a combined minus-3 points); will either unit show up for the rematch? Despite having a game-and-a-half cushion over Anderson, the one thing Jody doesn't need is a season sweep at the hands of the Brew Krew.

victims of the bye week:
Anderson - RB Tomlinson, REC Holt
Jody - REC Glenn, DEF Miami

Sims Stereco at The Pimps
(3 - 4)   (6 - 0 - 1)
series history: Pimps lead 6-4
last meeting: Week 11, 2001
Sims 32, at PIMPS 44

The Sims Stereco visit The still-undefeated Pimps this weekend in the first of two meetings between the clubs over the next three weeks. The Stereco look to bounce back from their Week 7 defeat to the Abstract Machines and gain some ground in the East. The Pimps currently hold a 3-and-a-half game edge over Sims and could all but bury any Stereco division title hopes with a win.

Drew Bledsoe is said to get the call at QB this weekend for the Stereco, and he'll have added pressure to produce with running back Ricky Williams out on bye. The Pimps will also be without a star halfback, as Jerome Bettis will sit out nursing a knee strain. As a result, Emmitt Smith will join Shaun Alexander in the backfield to carry the load against the Stereco defense. Sims has always played The Pimps tough, though, and would like nothing better than to hand them their first loss of the season.

Victims of the bye week:
Sims - RB Williams, DEF San Diego
Pimps - REC Ferguson, DEF Green Bay

Naughty Figs at Irwin Hellions
(2 - 5)   (3 - 4)
series history: Irwin leads 2-0
last meeting: Week 7, 2001
Figs 15, vs IRWIN 36

Two teams currently in a tail spin meet in the week's only interdivisional matchup, as the Naughty Figs head to the Hellhole to meet the Irwin Hellions. The Figs have dropped two straight and are on the verge of falling out of the playoff race if that trend continues. The Hellions have also lost two straight, and the three-time defending Western Division champions now find themselves two games back of Thomas' Bock Boys.

Things just haven't gone the Figs' way this year. They put up lots of points at the beginning of the year but have been pummeled lately, losing their last two by a combined 29-92. Rich Gannon and Joe Horn are everyday weapons, but a couple of other big-game players are needed if the Figs are to make a late-season playoff push. Irwin has more than his share of big-game players, but it seems like they've all spent time at the doctor's office. Unlike in previous years, this notoriously thin roster has been put to the test this season and is struggling to produce. Thankfully, their Buccaneer defense has reemerged as one of the game's best and will keep them in any game. As defending Super Bowl champs, they really can't afford to lose this one.

Victims of the bye week:
Figs - K Longwell, QB Fiedler
Irwin - QB Favre, REC Chambers

Piana Raze at Thomas' Bock Boys
(0 - 6 - 1)   (5 - 2)
series history: Thomas leads 4-1
last meeting: Week 1
THOMAS 36, at Piana 25

After being chewed up and spit out by the Eastern Division's best last week, the woeful Piana Raze travel to Bockville to tango with the West-leading Bock Boys. At 5-2, Thomas is off to its best start in franchise history and is looking to lay claim to their first division title.

Tom Brady returns to the starting lineup for the Raze, who hope he can recapture some of his early-season magic and ignite a stagnate offense. The Bock Boys, on the other hand, have plenty of weapons, the most dangerous being halfback Priest Holmes, who torched the Raze for 19 points in back in Week 1. A repeat performance here could make quick work of the visiting team. Piana has never won in Bockville, having been outscored 75-10 in just two games, but Thomas needs to make sure it takes care of the business at hand. The Bock Boys can't afford to get caught looking ahead to next week's game with the hated Hellions.

Victims of the bye week:
Piana - REC Bruce, REC Driver, QB Warner
Thomas - REC Conway

Game of the Week
Abstract Machines at P.W.O.P.
(2 - 3 - 2)   (3 - 3 - 1)
series history: tied 5-5-1
last meeting: Week 1
P.W.O.P. 37, at Machines 37

The Abstract Machines and Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ are both looking for a late-season push to get them back to the playoffs. Last year, both clubs saw their respective seasons come to an end during Championship Week. In this season's opener, the two runners up managed to tie each other, 37-37. Since then, the Profiteer$ have gone 3-3 while the Machines have done a half-game worse, posting a 2-3-1 record.

Both clubs will be without key offensive weapons. The Machines will have a new QB for the first time this season, handing the offense over from Drew Brees (out on bye) to Trent Green. More significantly, however, is that the visitors will be without Marshall Faulk, who has dominated the Machines' last two games, both wins. P.W.O.P., meanwhile, will lack the services of Ahman Green, who is fresh off a three touchdown performance.

Yet there are plenty of weapons left. Corey Dillon returns to the Machines' backfield after his bye week, and Corey Bradford has emerged as a legitimate threat through the air. The Machines' also boast the league's most productive kicker this season in the ageless Morton Anderson. P.W.O.P. will have to rely on Travis Henry to move the chains on the ground, but James Thrash and Hines Ward anchor a dangerous receiving corps that also features the as-yet-contained Randy Moss.

Barring a repeat of their Week 1 encounter, this should be a huge confidence boost for the winner. A third straight win for the Machines would negate their dismal start and put them in the thick of the playoff race. A Profiteer win would put P.W.O.P. back over .500 and keep them undefeated in divisional play.

Machines - QB Brees, RB Faulk
P.W.O.P. - RB Green, RB Canidate
