Week 10 Previews

Anderson Brewmeisters
at
Naughty Figs
(3 - 6)
(6 - 3)
series history: Figs lead 2-1
last meeting: Week 4
FIGS 23, at Anderson 22

Two weeks ago, the Anderson Brewmeisters sat at 1-6, losers of four straight and two losses shy of playoff elimination. Since then, Anderson has played some of its best football of the season and scored two crucial wins against Sims and P.W.O.P. to stay alive. The Naughty Figs enter Week 10 on a bit of a high note having doused the Raze last week, but they have only won two of their last five and trail the division-leading Pimps by a game.

Unlike their Week 4 single-point affair, the Brew Krew will actually be starting a quarterback this time around; Peyton Manning - cracked jaw and all - will get the nod against Rich Gannon, who's had a solid if not stellar campaign for the Figs thus far. The game may ultimately be decided on defense however, where the Figs will once again start Anderson's ex-Ravens crew against its former team. If Anderson's Jaguars or Chargers can't meet the challenge, the Brewskies may be on their way out of the playoff picture. If they can, and Anderson pulls the upset, hold on to your hats.

Jody's C.W.O.T.
at
Sims Stereco
(3 - 6)
(3 - 6)

series history: Jody leads 7-2
last meeting: Week 1
Sims 27, at JODY 35

Half the league - a full five teams - enter Week 10 at 3-6. Those five teams must win three of their final four games to be playoff eligible, and the only matchup of the week that features two such teams is Jody's C.W.O.T. taking on the Sims Stereco. Jody suffered a setback last week against The Pimps, but has still won two of its last three games, not to mention its Week 1 encounter with Sims. The Stereco have not fared as well in recent weeks, having dropped four straight.

Sims' Kurt Warner led the Brewmeisters to the league championship in 1999, but has yet to deliver the same electrifying performance wearing the red and black. Last week, Warner was actually shut out against the Machines. Looking to give Warner and the offense a shot in the arm, the Stereco went out and traded RB Garrison Hearst to Piana for receiver Antonio Freeman. Will Warner, Freeman, and Owens be enough to keep in front of Jody's aggressive offense with the likes of Anthony Thomas and Tim Brown? History says no. Keep your eye on this one - the loser will be pushed to the brink of playoff elimination.

Abstract Machines
at
P.W.O.P.
(5 - 4)
(3 - 6)
series history: Machines lead 5-4
last meeting: Week 3
P.W.O.P. 10, at MACHINES 20

The Machines are hot. They've won two straight and are on target to host their first ever playoff game. P.W.O.P. is not. After a brief and uplifting three game win streak, the Profiteer$' fortune has reverted back to the days of old in the midst of a three game dry spell.

The Machines' Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison had a field day last week against the Stereco, and have high hopes to do it again. P.W.O.P. is seeing better production out of Jeff Garcia and Ahman Green, but its' defense has been its own worst enemy in recent weeks. The Profiteer$ can't afford another possible win thrown away by horrendous defensive performances. Their Raiders squad, which coughed up four points last week against the Brewmeisters, has to find its pride and fire within if P.W.O.P. wants to keep alive its playoff aspirations. The Machines, meanwhile, are holding out hope of catching Irwin in the West. This is the first of four divisional games to close out their season.

Thomas' Bock Boys
at
Piana Raze
(4 - 5)
(3 - 6)
series history: Thomas leads 2-1
last meeting: Week 6
Piana 10, at THOMAS 36

Despite losing six of their last seven games, the Piana Raze enter their Week 10 matchup with Thomas only a game back of the Bock Boys. Both clubs have been beaten down the past two weeks by teams with winning records, so this game has to be looked at as a good opportunity to get back on the horse, so to speak.

The Bock Boys will undoubtedly be starting Daunte Culpepper behind center this week after axing the incapable Trent Green. Piana, however, retains a small QB controversy as Brian Griese looks to get the nod ahead of last week's starter, Tom Brady. This game will also mark the debut of Garrison Hearst in a Raze uniform, having been brought over from Sims in exchange for Antonio Freeman. Piana hopes the recovered half back can spark a late season surge. Thomas won the their Week 6 meeting with Piana, 36-10 in Bockville, but has yet to win in 2001 as a visiting team. Strangely enough, the Raze have yet to appease the home fans this year, going 0-4 at En Fuego Field. Something - as they say - has to give.

Game of the Week
The Pimps
at
Irwin Hellions
(7 - 2)
(8 - 1)
series history: Irwin leads 5-1
last meeting: Week 10, 2000
Pimps 25, at IRWIN 41

Two league heavyweights collide as the East leading Pimps visit the West leading Irwin Hellions in the premiere game of the week. No two teams have been hotter over the past month and a half. The Pimps have won five straight contests to take a one-game lead in their division while the Hellions have won six in a row in building their current three-game lead in the West. As an interdivisional showdown, this game may or may not have any effect on the division races, but it will go a long way in establishing a Super Bowl favorite.

The Pimps' are playing with the total package - a balanced offense and an unrelenting defense. While Mark Brunell has settled in as a capable signalcaller, the offense has truly been sparked by the emergence of a formidable backfield. Jerome Bettis and Shaun Alexander have begun consistently combining for nearly 20 points per game. Out on the flanks, Rod Smith and Jerry Rice anchor a veteran and dangerous receiving corps. Between Jeff Wilkens and Matt Stover, place-kicking hasn't been an issue. Yet the most pleasant surprise of the season has to be the play of the Packers' defense. And they will have their hands full this week.

Irwin has been bowling over opponents since its only loss of the season in Week 3. In light of a Tampa Bay defense that hasn't played to its past potential, the Hellions are getting the job done on offense. The 25 points scored last week against Thomas was only the second time all year Irwin has been held to under 30. This is due to the likes of Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb, Curtis Martin, Edgerrin James, Jimmy Smith, Wade Richey, and a fairly clean bill of health. Yet the Edge may now be lost for the season, and Irwin will have to rely on first round pick Warrick Dunn to pick up the slack. A win here and Irwin will become the first team to post nine wins in the regular season since - ironically - The Pimp in 1999.
