Week 9 Previews

The Pimps
at
Jody's C.W.O.T.
(6 - 2)
(3 - 5)
series history: Pimps lead 6-4
last meeting: Week 5
Jody 26, at PIMPS 34

The Pimps and Jody's Colossal Waste of Time are the two hottest teams in the East. They're also the two most successful teams in the division over the past two and a half seasons. While The Pimps' have pulled in front behind a four-game winning streak, the C.W.O.T. have resurfaced in the race due to huge wins over each of the last two weeks. A win this week will pull them to within two with four to go.

Holding onto a division lead is something The Pimps couldn't do last season, but than again, they didn't have Shaun Alexander, Mark Brunell, and a possessed Packers defense last season. Jody is also getting it done thanks to new blood. Rookie Anthony Thomas has excelled in place of Eddie George and has led Jody back to respectability. The defending division champs need this win in the worst way, as a loss would essentially end their title defense and leave them fighting for a Wild Card. The Pimps would like nothing better than to send them on their way.

Sims Stereco
at
Abstract Machines
(3 - 5)
(4 - 4)

series history: Machines lead 5-2-1
last meeting: Week 12, 2000
MACHINES 28, at Sims 22

As far as franchises with similar histories go, the Sims Stereco and Abstract Machines are joined at the hip. In '97, both clubs squeaked into the playoffs as the fifth and sixth seeds. In '98, they met in the Draft Bowl. The following year they met in the Wild Card round as the fourth and fifth seeds, and last year they finished as the only two teams without having a fourteenth game to play. So why stop now? Only a game separates the two clubs through eight weeks of 2001.

Sims enters the matchup riding a three game losing streak. Despite sporting Kurt Warner, Terrell Owens, and Ricky Williams, the Stereco have yet to put all the pieces together for a championship run. The Machines have suffered similar results thus far, even with Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison anchoring the roster. Each team is desperate for this win, hoping to shake the underachieving stigma of its franchise while inching closer to a playoff berth. Stat of the moment: Machines are 2-0-1 at home against the Stereco.

Naughty Figs
at
Piana Raze
(5 - 3)
(3 - 5)
series history: Piana leads 1-0
last meeting: Week 12, 2000
B.Y.O.B. 22, at PIANA 24

The Naughty Figs, searching for some air after being on the receiving end of consecutive beatings, visit En Fuego Field to lock horns with the collapsing Piana Raze. Overall, he Figs have dropped three of four entering this game, and the Raze have been losers of five of their previous six. So a date with the Raze may be just what the doctor ordered for the Figs to keep on The Pimps' heels in the East.

Aside from the obvious playoff positioning at stake, the Figs are playing to avenge a 2-point loss to the Raze here at En Fuego Field last season. It was a loss that snapped a four-game winning streak and effectively eliminated the then-Banshees from playoff contention. The Raze have yet to find the home field advantageous at all this season, having lost all three of their home games to date. Yet could the return of Terrell Davis spark an upset? Stay tuned...

Irwin Hellions
at
Thomas' Bock Boys
(7 - 1)
(4 - 4)
series history: Irwin leads 3-1
last meeting: Week 1
Thomas 14, at IRWIN 48

Whoa Nellie! The games just keep getting bigger for the Bock Boys. Having lost to the East-leading Pimps last week, Thomas returns home to host the hated Hellions. Irwin enters the game with a five-game winning streak and a perfect 3-0 record on the road. The Bock Boys counter with a 3-0 record at Bockyard Stadium and a burning desire to beat the Hell out of Irwin.

Four games into this series, one thing is clear: there are NO close games. The average margin of victory has been 37 points, with the home team claiming each rout. This bodes well for Thomas, who routed Irwin 49-19 last year in Bockville. A gimpy Edgerrin James also bodes well for the Bock Boys, who will have the tall task of trying to keep pace with the formidable Irwin offense. As if they didn't need any additional motivation: a second loss to Irwin would eliminate Thomas from the Western race with four games still to play.

Irwin - none

Game of the Week
Anderson Brewmeisters
at
P.W.O.P.
(2 - 6)
(3 - 5)
series history: Anderson leads 4-2
last meeting: Week 9, 2000
ANDERSON 31, at Players 18

The Anderson Brewmeisters and P.W.O.P. may not be the sexiest matchup of the week, but it is one of the more intriguing. There's not much of a history between them (although Anderson did send the Players home in Championship Week, 1998), but they currently share a common view: on the outside looking in of the playoff picture.

Anderson finally won its second game of the season last week behind strong efforts from Peyton Manning and Mike Vanderjagt. Yet the Brewmeisters still have the league's worst record and will still need to win four of their final five games to even qualify for the playoffs. Injuries have mounted and expectations have dropped, but this is still a proud franchise. At the very least, the Brew Crew will be looking to bust some heads down the stretch in hopes of avoiding the franchise's first ever Draft Bowl berth.

No team knows the Draft Bowl quite like the Profiteer$. Three of the four Bowl games have featured P.W.O.P., but the Profiteer$ are fighting like mad to stay out of its commemorative program this season. P.W.O.P. has dropped its last two, and are still looking for that elusive fourth win of the season. Yet they'll need two beyond that to qualify for the franchise's first playoff berth since 1998. With games still left against the Naughty Figs, the Abstract Machines, and The Pimps, this is not one the Profiteer$ can afford to let get away.

Anderson - none
