Week 5 Previews

Sims Stereco
at
Naughty Figs
(2 - 2)
(4 - 0)
series history: Sims leads 2-0
last meeting: Week 6, 2000
B.Y.O.B. 0, at SIMS 26

Hot on the heels of two straight victories, the Sims Stereco hit the road to challenge the only team yet to lose in 2001, the Naughty Figs. Despite the two-game difference in the win column, Sims should have plenty of confidence, being the only Eastern division team to sweep the season series with the Figs last season.

Ironically, that sweep kept Sims out of the Draft Bowl and instead allowed the Figs to claim the first overall draft pick, which they in turn dealt to Anderson for the stellar Baltimore defense. Now, Sims' Kurt Warner, Ricky Williams, and Terrell Owens will have to find holes in that defense if they hope to pull the upset. Moreover, the Stereco will need their own defense to put up another huge game to tie up the likes of Rich Gannon and Lamar Smith. If they can't, the Figs could complete the early season sweep of their four divisional opponents.

victims of the bye week:
Sims - K Akers
Figs - none

Jody's C.W.O.T.
at
The Pimps
(1 - 3)
(2 - 2)

series history: Pimps lead 5-4
last meeting: Championship Week, 2000
Pimps 16, at JODY 44

Two old foes meet for the first time in 2001 as Jody's stumbling C.W.O.T. visit The Pimps. Between the two of them, these two clubs have alternated first and second place finishes in the East over the past two years. Four weeks into this season, however, the C.W.O.T. and Pimps have thus far been left in the wake of the Naughty Figs.

Jody's dropped an uncharacteristic three straight after a Week 1 victory, and The Pimps were downed by the Stereco last week, shifting the importance of this game to mere survival. The Pimps have taken the last five regular season meetings with the C.W.O.T., but don't have a quarterback available to start. Jody might be able to take advantage if only Eddie George and Stephen Davis could offer a resemblance to last season's power duo. The C.W.O.T. have never lost four straight, and to do so here would severely hinder their quest to repeat as Eastern champs.

victims of the bye week:
Jody - RB Mack, RB Henry
Pimps - QB Johnson, QB Brunell, REC Price

Anderson Brewmeisters
at
Thomas' Bock Boys
(1 - 3)
(1 - 3)
series history: Thomas leads 2-0
last meeting: Wild Card Week, 2000
Anderson 33, at THOMAS 38

Beer Bowl 3 sees the Anderson Brewmeisters visiting their cross-divisional nemesis, Thomas' Bock Boys, for the third straight time. Thomas has taken the previous two meetings, with the last snapping Anderson's perfect 5-0 postseason record. Yet their first meeting was perhaps even more controversial, as the Brewmeisters used half their season's transactions preparing for the game only to come up short. Now, they get another shot at redemption.

Both clubs come into this game searching for any kind of silver lining in an otherwise dreary start to the season. Anderson just missed getting their second win last week and is already three games back in the East. Thomas has dropped two straight and is playing in only their second home game of the season. If history stays its course, some Bock Boy home cooking could spell doom for the Brewmeisters.

victims of the bye week:
Anderson - REC Moulds, DEF Jacksonville, RB Taylor, RB Staley
Thomas - REC McCardell, DEF Philadelphia

P.W.O.P.
at
Piana Raze
(1 - 3)
(2 - 2)
series history: Piana leads 7-3
last meeting: Week 1
PIANA 24, at P.W.O.P. 21

The Piana Raze, now losers of two straight, are looking to right the ship and sweep the season series from the P.W.O.P. for the first time since 1997. The Profiteer$, coming off their first win of the season, are playing in their fifth straight divisional contest.

The Raze beat the P.W.O.P. in Week 1 thanks largely to the strong play of Brian Griese, but the young quarterback has struggled in Piana's two losses, scoring only 4 points in each of the last two games. Should his struggles continue, the Profiteer$ could make it two in a row behind solid games from Jeff Garcia, Ahman Green, and Randy Moss, who's past due for a breakout game. Piana has yet to win at En Fuego field this season, and the P.W.O.P. has yet to avoid losing on the road. As the cliché goes, something will have to give.

victims of the bye week:
P.W.O.P. - REC Thrash
Piana - none

Game of the Week
Irwin Hellions
at
Abstract Machines
(3 - 1)
(3 - 1)
series history: Irwin leads 7-3
last meeting: Week 11, 2000
IRWIN 38, at Machines 33

Are you ready for some football? Expect fast action and hard hits as the Abstract Machines play host to the world champion Irwin Hellions in a key Western Division battle. Both clubs come into the game tied for first with identical 3-1 records, but the Machines have already dropped a divisional game. The Hellions, by contrast, are looking to score the first round sweep of their divisional opponents, having already downed the other three clubs. Irwin leads the all-time series decisively, and has won three of the last four meetings. Just don't tell that to the Machines.

The mechanical ones are sporting one of the franchise's most potent offenses ever, led by Elvis Grbac, Marshall Faulk, and Marvin Harrison. Yet the biggest reason for the Machines' early success this season has been the aggressive play of their Rams defense. They could cause fits for the Hellions' Brett Favre, Edgerrin James, and Curtis Martin. As a result, Irwin will need its own Buccaneer defense to play its game of the season to keep pressure on the Machines' offense.

Five weeks into the season, they just don't get much better than this. Particularly when the two quarterbacks - Favre and Grbac - will be going head-to-head on Sunday.

victims of the bye week:
Irwin - QB McNabb, REC Smith
Machines - none
