Week 3 Previews

Anderson Brewmeisters
at
Jody's C.W.O.T.
(0 - 2)
(1 - 1)
series history: Anderson leads 6-2
last meeting: Week 11, 2000
Anderson 33, at JODY 41

One of the fiercest rivalries of the Eastern Division is renewed for 2001 as the Anderson Brewmeisters visit Jody's Colossal Waste of Time to kick off Week 3 action. Both teams are coming off Week 2 setbacks, and, unlike the C.W.O.T., the Brewmeisters are still looking to post their first win of the young season. What better time to do so than against a team they've more or less owned for the past three seasons?

Yet in spite of that history, Anderson comes into the game banged up and thin at runningback. Jody is nursing some wounds as well and will have to go without star runningback Eddie George, who is out on a bye. With so much potential firepower from both sides hampered by injury, the defenses could decide the game. Foreboding stat for the Brew Crew: dating back to last season, Jody has been solid at home, winning its last six in a row at the Vortex.

victims of the bye week:
Anderson - DEF Tennessee
Jody - RB George

Thomas' Bock Boys
at
Naughty Figs
(1 - 1)
(2 - 0)

series history: Thomas leads 1-0
last meeting: Week 13, 2000
THOMAS 29, at B.Y.O.B. 25

Last year, a Week 13 meeting between the league's two expansion franchises was ultimately inconsequential to the teams' respective postseason fates. While you hardly call any Week 3 meeting consequential, the 2001 rematch between the Bock Boys and Naughty Figs is sure to draw more excitement.

The undefeated Naughty Figs are - for at least a week - the toast of the Eastern Division, and the B-Boys are coming off an exhilarating 1-point win, evening their record at 1-1. Rich Gannon and Jamal Anderson have been solid for the Figs thus far, but they'll have their hands full against Thomas' feisty Eagles defense. The Bock Boys enter the game sporting an impressive 6-1 record against the East and would like nothing better than to improve upon it.

victims of the bye week:
Thomas - none
Figs - none

Sims Stereco
at
Irwin Hellions
(0 - 2)
(2 - 0)
series history: tied 3-3
last meeting: Week 5, 2000
Sims 22, at IRWIN 27

The World Champs get their first taste of the Eastern division as the hated - and winless - Sims Stereco come to town. Things could be better in Stereco-land. The franchise has now lost seven straight games, and it appears the injury bug is sinking his teeth back into the starting lineup, as Rocket Ismail will be out a few games with an ailing knee.

The Hellions, by contrast, are healthy as ever, but are in need of a kicker and a receiver. Longtime Hellion kicker Olindo Mare was cut last week, and two of Irwin's four receivers are out on a bye. The Hellions played short last week and scored a win; what makes them think they can't do it again? Ricky Williams vs. Edgerrin James will be fun to watch.

victims of the bye week:
Sims - none
Irwin - REC Morton, REC Robinson

The Pimps
at
Piana Raze
(1 - 1)
(2 - 0)
series history: tied 3-3
last meeting: Wild Card Week, 2000
PIMPS 39, at Piana 32

The Piana Raze make their 2001 home debut against the team that ended their 2000 campaign right here at En Fuego Field. Last season, The Pimps came in and won their first ever postseason game, taking advantage of a costly minus(-) four point effort by Piana's New Orleans defense. The Saints are chomping at the bit for a little hometown redemption, yet the defensive story of the season thus far has been The Pimps' Packers squad, which has stripped 50 points away from opponents in two games.

On offense, Brian Griese and Jason Elam have been gold for the Raze, while Rod Smith has been nothing short of a life vest for The Pimps. Can Piana knock off The Pimps to move to 3-0, or will the league's feather-capped stars make it four in a row over the Raze?

victims of the bye week:
Pimps - none
Piana - REC Masoon

Game of the Week
P.W.O.P.
at
Abstract Machines
(0 - 2)
(1 - 1)
series history: tied 4-4
last meeting: Week 13, 2000
PLAYERS 35, at Machines 29

Although the combined record of the teams in this week's Game of the Week is only 1-3, this matchup between Pirk's Wicked Oil Profiteer$ and the Abstract Machines is well-suited for primetime. In Week 13 of 2000, on this very field, the Profiteer$ scored their only win in their past eleven games, knocking the Machines out of playoff contention and into postseason limbo. While the then-Players went on to compete in the Draft Bowl, the Machines season ended right there, and they've had all year to reflect on it.

Now P.W.O.P. takes to the road for the first time in 2001, still looking for that elusive first win. The Machines, by contrast, let one get a way last week, falling a point shy of remaining undefeated.

Both clubs have improved over the offseason, making this matchup all the more exciting. Second overall pick Ahman Green has been a Godsend for the Profiteer$, finally giving them a legitimate threat on the ground. The Machines added Elvis Grbac, hoping he can develop into the star quarterback that can get them back into the Super Bowl. But first, both clubs will need that all-important first divisional win.

victims of the bye week:
P.W.O.P. - K Nedney, QB McNair, REC Crowell
Machines - RB Stewart
